August 3, 20178 yr Those 172s ditch very well. I also recall one ditching outside of Toronto Island Airport (Billy Bishop) into Lake Ontario in the cold winter. It floats quite well, the pilot stepped out and climbed back holding onto the tail until the marine unit came, they just plucked him off the tail of the aircraft and he only got his legs wet. These guys could have ditched it and swam ashore, plenty of people on the beach to help them as well. I don't think the Student should face any charges as the instructor should have taken control when the incident occurred, that would be proper procedure.
