8700K Batch Numbers

Featured Replies

Not sure how significant batch numbers are these days, now this particular platform, as its based on previous, is quite optimised.

But mine is: L734C936

L = Malaysia

7 = 2017 manufactured

34 = Week 34 manufactured

C = Lot Number. Wafer ID.

936 = Position on wafer.

From what I've read, looks like wafer C chips from weeks in the 30's clock high. Am hoping for the best. I will delid of course so we shall see.

Interesting stuff.

Where did you find the info about the higher clocks for particular manufacturing time points.

FAA: ATP-ME, 737 CA, enough time in the 757/767 to be dangerous 🤠

Well the silicone lottery has always worked that way of course, as you probably know. That's how different CPU models are defined. The good ones on the wafer are binned as, for example 8700K, and the lesser chips on the wafer become something akin to the 8600K. The chips from the centre of the wafer tend to be the best and the ones on the outside more likely to be less capable.

Certain batches of wafers and manufacturing locations tend to be better than others also and this was the subject of the posts I was reading, with wafer C overclocking well apparently. What I'm not sure of is how much variability there is in terms of Coffee Lake, as it's pretty much a previous architecture with a few more cores, bells and whistles etc. Possibly there may be less variability and the claims for wafer C just that, merely claims.

This was the thread...

It seems most early CPUs come from L(Malaysia) and have the highest potential overclocks. During most releases I've primarily seen "L" batches come first and foremost.

Early findings and speculation: It seems that wafer C from week 30 has high overclocking chips if most forum posts and redditor's claims are accurate. Even from this post alone there are quite a few "decent" to "good" chips from week 30 wafer C.

EDIT: I am of the opinion now with nearly 99% certainty that any week 30 lot C CPU is going to clock high. ie. L730CXXX
