In its early years though, German aircraft were not allowed to operate in or out of West Berlin due to the city being controlled by the Western Allies. So Air Berlin started operations as a US-based carrier with american and later french markings. Air Berlin USA flew to various European holiday destinations and later became Germanys second largest airline."
