June 10, 200619 yr Am I the only one who miss the ratings in the reviews? Instead of removing them it would be better to rate in different aspects of the product like documentation graphics etc. One thing that I do like about the reviews are the 'What I liked about' and 'what I didn't like' headings. I usually read this first. But I do miss some sort of graded ratings.
June 10, 200619 yr ratings are a course and inaccurate way to grade a product.Far better to read the entire review (or better yet, read several from several indepentent reviewers) and make up your own mind.
June 10, 200619 yr I kind of miss them too, because you could take a quick look and get an idea of how good it is. But then that brings a bunch of other issues so maybe it is best that they're not there. Have to read the whole review now. :-)billg
June 11, 200619 yr No because you really need to read any review to learn the specific details.Ive seen some that said things like, the vc is slow, not very detailed and the gauges are slow. Yet the final score might be 4 out of 5. Well I spend most my time in the vc so thats a big NO to me.Another review might give a scenery 5 stars yet buried within the review might say it has big problems running with say,Ultimate Terrain.A really basic, undetailed, crude plane with a horrible flight model might get 5 stars because at $10 the reviewer feels its a easy and quick plane to jump into and easy on the frames. But if someone sees 5 stars, buys it and is accustomed to Level D,PMDG quality, he is going to be very dissapointed.
June 11, 200619 yr >I kind of miss them too, because you could take a quick look>and get an idea of how good it is.No you couldn't, because the ratings were frequently flawed. Best-in-class products like Flightscenery KPDX or Aeroworx King Air (v1) got merely average ratings, and based on that many readers would probably move on. I don't even read reviews anymore, an frequently find word-of-mouth in these forums to be more valuable.-

Then decide if to read the whole review and then before spending your money read more independent reviews.

For example by rating different aspect of the product. That would avoid the problem of a simple product getting a high score only because of the low price. Also a more descriptive standard for what the ratings means.
June 11, 200619 yr The stars are helpful. Give an overall review. They are used commonly in all kinds of reviews for products.
June 11, 200619 yr Author I never bothered looking at the stars. It is just too arbitrary of a rating for complex flightsim addons. All it does is lead to the inevitable comparisons of addon "A" vs "B". Often, these addons are different enough to make direct comparisons impractical, yet we would still lead to countless threads of people upset about this rating or upset about that. If you want a quick summary of a review, the best section to read is the "what I liked" and "what I didn't like" areas. People should not be basing their purchasing decisions on an arbitrary star rating. They should be reading all reviews, searching user posts on forums, etc. You as the consumer has to make an informed decision, and a review is just a tool to help in that process (not do it for you). ------------------------- Craig from KBUF
