OpenLC Europe or buy regions seperately?

Featured Replies

They are not the same product.

OpenLC is simply landclass for most of Europe, and requires Orbx Global textures first. You can optionally have Global Vector too.

Each Orbx Region is a complete self-contained package of mesh, textures with bespoke autogen models, landclass vector data (roads, rivers, railways, coastlines) and bespoke autogen models. Default airports are also upgraded. They require a lot more resources to run and are at their best with VFR flying.

So you don't need global and vector in order for regions to work? If so, should I go for openLC considering that I have both global and vectors already?

Regions are fully self-contained, they don't depend on anything else being present.

OpenLC will work out better value, you will get coverage of most of Europe and it is sufficient for IFR.

Regions are much more detailed but they only cover small areas (typically half a country at most). IMO they're only really worthwhile in areas where you often fly low and slow. I have Orbx Scotland though because I fly in/out of a lot of smaller Scottish airports so I got the benefits of the upgraded airports, even when flying IFR.

If you fly mostly airliners, you're better off with the Europe LC. You'll notice no real difference in terms of visual fidelity, but performance will be much, much better.

Two exceptions, IMHO: Norway and Scotland. Those are worth getting the regional packages. For e.g. England I literally can't even see any difference in visuals for airliner flying in most areas with the "full-fat region", but performance goes way down.

Norway in particular is stunning, great value, and arguably Orbx's greatest achievement.
