I just purchased and installed P3D version 4 and get the above message when trying to install my PMDG 737 NGX. How doI get around this?

Make sure to download a current version of your NGX installer. Either you have a version of the installer that we released before P3Dv4 was released (i.e. a very old installer), or you have some sort of program on your computer that is messing up your registry.
