Up and around Mount Cook (NZ:SI)

Recommended Posts

Below are a few shots for a dusk time flight (8000' max altitude) from NZMC to the majestic Mt Cook (NZ:SI/Orbx). NZ:SI has numerous small and pretty lakes tucked in between these mountains - suitable for Lake TD (sometimes can be challenging to get in there). In this flight, I selected a nearby lake (at altitude 3100') for touching down with the C185 Skywagon (Amphibian). After landing (and with engines off), I could imagine the serenity that only such secluded lakes can provide in reality...

Mt Cook (at 12000') is where Sir Edmund Hillary sharpened his skills to later climb Mount Everest (at 29000'). Need to still locate Mount Everest in my AS Lukla add-on...

The good folks at REX, have recently restored my 5+ year old purchase-license with their latest version basic-software (REX-Essentials Overdrive plus Beta Patch). Here, I am simply using one of their preset Themes (I frankly still lack the artistic skills with lighting to try the amazing things that I have seen demonstrated here).

I had the good fortune to fly in a helicopter around the top of Mt Cook the morning after it had a massive 12 miilion cubic meter landslide.  The pilot and us tourists were seeing it before the news got out to the world. It was a stupendous slide coming right from top of the peak and actually decreased Mt Cook's altitude by 32 feet.  The right face in your picture #9 is where the slide happened 27 years ago.

Went for 4.6 miles

Halfway down, the slide hit a large ridge and catapulted massive amounts of rock and ice 500 up the ridge and about 1000 feet in the air above where it fell.  This was evidenced by a lack of any significant scar in the immediate lee side of the ridge.  You can see the ridge that the debris catapulted over in the photo in the link above.

(Direct-links are to be excluded here) Looked around for "Mt Cook landslide", and got the details you mentioned above . What awesome force of nature apparently it was! A mini earthquake! Glad the image has some fine resemblance to the real thing that you saw and could identify. It must be fantastic to see Mt Cook. Maybe one day. Thanks.
