P3D Randomly Freezes for periods of 10 to 20 seconds

Recommended Posts

I've run into an issue recently that's quite annoying, and I'm not sure what's causing it.

I use the latest version of P3D with native Oculus VR, and randomly, while using the simulator, I'll experience moments where the sim will freeze for periods of 10 to 20 seconds. Once it unfreezes, the sim continues from where it was just before it started freezing.

Sometimes this will happen at very inopportune times, like as soon as the wheels touch down on the runway.

I'll use various addons, like third party aircraft (PMDG, Aerosoft, A2A, CaptainSim, etc), or even default aircraft, but it's the same issue. I also use programs like ActiveSky, ChasePlane, ORBX, REX, SPAD (for Saitek panels), and whatnot. Doubt it's a 3rd party addon, but you never know. I thought it might be FSUIPC causing it, judging from some threads I've read, but removing FSUIPC did not resolve the issue.

If anyone has any ideas on how to resolve this, I'd appreciate it!

I have some freeze periods of about 5 seconds (maybe a little bit more) but it seems to happen when I approach a complex addon airport.

A stutter at touchdown is often symptomatic of a sound driver issue.  You might check that you don't have a bunch of unneeded sound devices active, like the HD Audio on a video card, for example.  I generally disable all but the one(s) in use.

Could be related, but this issue seems to happen pretty much anywhere. Plus, I don't really use add on airports.

Interesting possibility. Are you referring to the sound device I have selected under "Sound" in my system's control settings? Whenever I use P3D, I am sure to select Rift Audio, but I also have my headset earphones and my computer's Realtek Digital Outpost (Realtek High Definition Audio). I'll manually switch between my sound devices depending on what I'm doing. For instance, switch to my headphones for first person shooters, Rift audio for P3D, or Realtek HD Audio if I'm watching a YouTube video, and just want to hear sound out of the computer's speakers.

Could this really be causing a problem in P3D? I never experienced it before, and this freezing issue seems to have emerged relatively recently.

I used to always read on the forum about this issue, as it is experienced by a lot of people. Interestingly, I never experienced the problem until about six months ago. It is annoying, because the pauses seem to be getting longer. At first when I noticed them, it may have been a second or so, but now like Wanthuyr, they can be as long as about five seconds. I would have thought, with all their resources, it would have been an easy thing for the guys at LM to discover and fix (?)

If you're using an nVidia GPU, more than likely it has a HD Audio adapter built into it as well.  You can see all of the audio devices in the Windows device manager...I always go there after a video driver update and disable the nVidia audio device(s).  I believe Rob Ainscough was having problems related to extraneous audio devices in P3D not too long ago.

The problem could emerge at any time a driver update is done, which in Winhosed 10 could happen automatically at any time without your input or foreknowledge, or whenever you manually update your drivers.
