July 21, 200619 yr It might not be too late to get this message to the developers. I recently communicated with one of the reporters that were invited to review FSX. I described the bug and asked him if it still existed. The Bug: When a plane crashes in Flight Simulator, it restarts rather than giving the user the option of deciding what to do. This could cause havoc on a server such as VATSIM if a simmer accidentally falls asleep at the console, and hit plane continues to restart at less than idea locations.Take a look at http://flightsim.apollo3.com/blog/apoblog....pe=f&article=37 for more details. If this problem were fixed we could call all the analysis options the
July 21, 200619 yr Moderator First of all, understand that I fully support the idea you've proposed. Rest assurred that you are by no means the only one lobbying for this...However, not to be a pedant, I should point out that this is not a "bug."If software consistently operates the way it was designed, which in this case is to 'reset the flight,' then that is not a "bug." It is a "feature" that functions per design! ;)What you are actually requesting is a "Feature Change..." :-beerchug Fr. July 21, 200619 yr I appreciate your understanding of the need for this fix.Programmers and designers are not perfect. In this case the developers of Flight Simulator have come up with a superb program. However, it has a flaw. I appreciate and understand that you describe this flaw as a feature. I
July 21, 200619 yr Author TBH I never fly on VATSIM with crash detection turned on to avoid the problem you describe, and I think you will find the majority of VATSIMers do this.Don't forget that you can get crashes with buildings and other planes while on the ground, not just while flying. The suggestion to turn off crash detection is mentioned many times in the VATSIM forum but I was surprised to see it is omitted in the PRC - maybe I need to ask them to include it along with "turn off 'pause on task switching'" which is included ;-)While I appreciate your suggested modification of FS would be useful, if I wanted to analyse my flying skills via the black box I would do so by flying off line with crash detection turned on.Given your VATSIM scenario would I learn anything from the crash analysis? That I fell asleep, that I ran out of fuel (I should have been monitoring the flight more closely). On long flights I assume you would use the a/p so you could 'leave the flightdeck' for a short while and the a/p would keep the plane flying safely. If you ran out of fuel then I would suggest that you have not been monitoring the flightdeck sufficiently well.Your example flight sounds more like 'lets do a transatlantic flight while I sleep' which of course VATSIM does not condone.I have flown many 8 - 10 hour flights using a/p on VATSIM and have never been away from the flightdeck for more than a few minutes on those flights. Even though I know the a/p will function correctly I still monitor the flight even if I am not actively flying the plane manually. Also I think there is freeware software out there that has a black box function which will probably work without have FS crash detection turned on.Bottom line, your additional feature would be useful but for me it's not the big deal you make it out to be.

July 22, 200619 yr Author Given your more detailed reasons for wanting an option to turn reset off I can now understand your reasoning.I still feel though that crash detection should be turned off when on VATSIM.There is probably scenery out there that causes phantom building crashes and because of the aircraft refresh rate on VATSIM you can still 'crash' into another aircraft even though you think you are clear, especially true in crowded taxiways. If I can find that utility that provides a black box with crash detection turned oof I will get back to you, it may help.
