Need some Monitor replacement advice

Featured Replies

Rarely do I find myself needing advice on what hardware to buy to get the simplest of jobs done, but with so many new tech things out there I am in need of some Monitor advice. I know I can spend my money where I like but its always good to get thoughts from the Hardware Gurus before wasting time and money on inadequate options. Your thoughts would be much appreciated.

The story goes something like this, I have a Samsung SyncMaster 24" S24B370  60Hz 1920x1080 (DP connected) for main sim views and general PC stuff ( an older LED monitor I'll admit) and a much older Samsung SyncMaster 22" BW206 60Hz 1680x1050 (HDMI Connected) for display of maps, flightplans, Plates, and other utilities. They were adequate in their day and seem to get the job done, great clarity and not too much for my GTX770 to handle.
I came back from a 2 week trip the other day, switched my PC back on at the wall socket, pressed the go button and saw no bios info or boot info on either monitor, obviously it had booted to the Windows logon screen but I could not see it for long enough, only a millisecond of the screen image was blinking or flashing once every minute or so, (I think my Monitors are cactus). I did the usual trouble shooting, swapping input cables trying various available inputs from the graphics card and the iGPU, nothing doing. I also tried Source and Power buttons on the monitors still no joy, moved on to swapping a very old 20" Viewsonic FlatPanel 1440x900 monitor that I know is working (it only has VGA and DVI connection) tried both with the GTX770 worked fine, at least the computer seems fine. So I'm not suspecting the OS, Graphics card or Graphics Drivers, Checked the OS power options, they're all good, checked the native resolutions nothing strange there. Opened each monitor checking for loose connectors or Blown Swollen CAPS, no issues there either They have had a fairly easy life no bumps scratches or banging around, no dust or burnt smells, Power supplies were reading correct stable voltage. Contacted Samsung (online chat) because a YT vid suggested Firmware upgrade, hoping they might have a Firmware update for at least the newest monitor S24B370H but no joy there, outta warranty, outta software support, and #$%^#@ outta luck, on all points.

Now its time to shop for new monitor replacements, the choices presented are burning my brain, I don't have a lot of cash to throw at the problem either, but I would like at least the same or slightly better performance as with my broken Samsungs, LED 24" FHD 1920x1080 1080p (native) 60Hz of the S24B370H.

I've looked at a few online, and looked in local electrical appliance store for what's on offer, I don't need anything super fast, super big , or super fancy / curvey or otherwise, Just enough to get back to FSX and other tasks at the same quality I had before without too much twiddling of settings that were perfect before the Monitors fritzed out.

I have seen in store, an "ACER Predator XB240H" "TN - FP" XB2 - Flat panel monitor" , which should do the trick, (No G-Sync on this 24" one).
XB2 27" is "IPS" with G-Sync but slower (4ms Refresh, 144 -240Hz Refresh Rate) UHD 4K, much more expensive when I need 2 replacements at once.

1920x1080 - 144Hz via Display Port connection. I have only 1 of these connectors on my GTX770 so any other monitor would need HDMI for the second connection I have 1xHDMI (don't know if that would bring the 144Hz down to the lowest common rating) I like the 144Hz Refresh Rate improvement it might give my sim some new life, and give my old eyes a break.
1ms Refresh, that's what my S24B370 had.
VGA DVI HDMI DP connections available for connection from the back of the monitor.
Thin Bezel makes the monitor seem bigger than a 24"
Looks like a solid well made unit, with a nice adjustable stand.
Cables for all connection types in Box.
I will need 2 of these monitors, which makes my replacement around AU$600.00

Here's the link, Specs at ASUS: https://www.acer.com/ac/en/AU/content/predator-model/UM.FX0SA.B01  Price is AU$399.00 but HarveyN and Amazon has AU$298.00, would this be a reasonable buy, would my GTX770 struggle with 2 of these connected via DP for Main FS screen and HDMI for secondary FS utilities.

Is this the best choice at the lower price point (bang for buck) or are there better options, brands, features, to consider for around the same money.

I'm working on a second portable system that uses a smallish (24") monitor for ease of transportability, and I ended up with a Dell S2417DG, which is a 24" 3160x1440 (UHD) G-Sync monitor.  It was US$330.  Looking at it side-by-side with an older Samsung 1080p monitor, it's a pretty significant step up in image quality, and the G-Sync is a really nice new tool added to the mix as well.  I'd really highly recommend you take the upgrade as an opportunity to step it up a bit, even at the same monitor size.

Hi Bob,

Thankyou for your response, I do appreciate you offering your experiences using the S2417DG as a comparison to the ACER Predator 24" XB240H.
Unfortunately it is NLA
The Dell S2417DG does not seem to be obtainable in Aust, but the last RRP was between AU$500.00 & AU$1330.00 significantly higher than the slightly lower spec Predator @ AU$289.00
Interesting that screen resolution is much higher 2560x1440 1440p and a G-Sync overclock 165Hz.

Today I ordered the Predator XB240H times 2, I think I will be happy as I just wanted to get on with a reasonable solution for the right money and availability. In the end its been too long not being able to use my FS PC, these Predators are higher spec than what I had so 144Hz refresh 1ms rate will improve the overall experience without the benefit of G-Sync, I'm happy with 1920x1080 1080p as a max res, though I may still use DSR in FSX.

Best regards Jethro
