New Build - Wait for 9900KS?

Featured Replies

I have just started getting parts for a new build to replace my PC that I sold over a year ago. I decided to go with z390 and 9900K or KF but there seems to be some info on the web that suggests it may be best to stay away from KF. I have also just found out the KS will be available in October. Should I wait for the KS? My thoughts are that even if it is too expensive, I can then pick up a 9900K for less.

Please post links to this info... been thinking about buying a KF but would like to learn more before opening my wallet.

The K has matured quite well... most will do 5.2GHz with good cooling.  Of course, Intel still hasn't revealed the price of the KS but we can be sure that it won't be cheap.  Either way, all of the 9xxx series CPU's demand top grade cooling.

If you don't absolutely need the new system right now it might be a good idea to wait the 4 weeks or so for the release of the KS.  Personally, though if I found a good deal on a K in the meantime I'd jump on it and not look back!

Good luck,

Greg

The real world test on the 9900KS should soon hit the web next month a slide has the 9900KS running at 5025ghz on all cores and threads with AIO cooling at 42deg, Der8auer will push this and I suspect will try for another OC record.

As for price I suspect Intel will try to match AMDs new CPU also releasing soon.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies. Unfortunately, I hadn't got a chance to read your replies earlier. The KS is now out and it seems a number of reviewers on YouTube are getting stable 5.2 all core overclocks. The thing that concerns me other than the price (especially here in Aus) is the warranty - down from 3yrs to just a single year. Still not sure at the moment but might make a decision at the end of the day otherwise it will be a few more months before this build is done.

I guess the question would now be, how much of a difference would there be in actually in Sim performance between the K and KS. The gaming benches used by most reviewers are not showing much of a difference.

@lownslo, I will see if I can find those links as well.

If you care more about performance and don't care about the price, get the KS.  As for the warranty, I've never had a CPU fail due to an overclock, and I've been doing it since the 486 days.  I also worked in the computer repair field for over a decade and NEVER saw a single failed CPU (other than those which were damaged due to incorrect installation and had too many bent pins).
