Saving scenery space.......

Featured Replies

Hi ..... those of you familiar with the novel 'Don Quixote' will also be familiar with the eponymous hero's tendency to tilt at windmills ....

I must admit to doing that thing from time to time, so please bear with me .... I run a selection of Orbx scenery in v4.5, and have just installed alongside in W10 a copy of v 3.4 .... problem I have is my wish to run that selection of scenery in 3.4 is not matched by the space to install the whole kit and caboodle a second time .... so the point of my query? .... any way of linking 3.4 into the files installed for 4.5???

I am aware that 3.4 32-bit and 4.5 64-bit, but hey when one tilts at windmills such technicalities add to the fun ..... thinking caps on chaps and chapesses!??????

I don't fully understand what you are trying to do.
You are very unlikely to get scenery built for P3D v4.x to work in P3D v3.4.

You can however have scenery from P3D v3 work in P3D v4 (not all of it does though).

Using a utility such as Lorby-SI P3DV4 Addon Organizer or SceneryConfigEditor, you should be able to link your already installed scenery for P3D v4 into your P3D v3.4 scenery.cfg file.

Problems will arise in the form of files in your scenery/world/scenery, texture and effects folders in v4 not being present or being able to be easily linked to v3.
You will probably have to copy these across into the main folder structure for v3, but I'm not a fan of that idea as you may corrupt your v3 install by using incompatible files in your older sim.

The best way to run 'two sets' of scenery would be for an install into v3, then link via .xml method all the necessary files for the add-on scenery.

If it's Orbx scenery you are talking about in your post, then you definitely cannot just try and link to their scenery outside of the usual v3 installation paths. Messes with the scripts.
You should ask over on their forums for guidance on whether that is possible with the new Orbx Central (not FTX Central) installer program.

@Lorby_SIdoes this work? Please feel free to correct what I have said.

Technically you can link the scenery, and the textures and everything else. P3D V3 already had the XML based addon package referencing. But it will be a lot of work ... probably for nothing. I'm not a scenery expert, but I suspect that since V4 uses different assets (models, materials, textures?) a lot of the scenery will just be black.

I would drop in a second HDD. Considering the amount of work that is required to achieve the correct linking, the sixty odd $ spent for a decent 2 TB disk are small change. Then move both ORBX folders to the new disk (ORBX_V3, ORBX_V4) using mklink in every simulator main folder to make it seem as if the original ORBX folder was still there. Then the whole content is gone from your main disk and you can install stuff at your heart's content.

Best regards

It is worth mentioning that in general, airports compiled for P3D v4 cause P3D v 3, 2,1 and FSX to crash.

I think the answer to the question is no, this would not be a viable option.
