Flying in New Zealand and lost an engine

Featured Replies

Was enjoying a nice East to West flight at the lower end of New Zealand South Island.

It was a flight picked up from the previous evening with the plan being to hit the West Coast and continue North, admiring the view and landing at random.

Then the right engine suddenly cut out, a first for myself where I've lost an engine in a twin (when I was trying not to).

Killed plenty of engines in singles (by not watching engine settings), but I thought I was doing OK with this one.

Made a sucessful landing @ Milford Sound (NZMF).

Cheers

So much varied terrain in NZ

It's nice flying over the NZ mountainous regions, especially when there is power to spare and climbing is not a struggle.

Engine is out and NZMF is my new landing field of choice,

Picked an AI ship to circle around while slowing and loosing height (that AI ships package is really nice - tip of the hat to the crew who put it together)

Lucky it was no real struggle to fly one engine

And safely on the ground. Flying on one engine was no problem, however Taxi was surprisingly difficult due to the single engine pull.

Orbx NZMF, a great little airport and also includes Quintin Lodge and Martin's Bay Lodge, two highly detailed and tricky airstrips to fly into and great fun.

Agree, NZ has dramatically varied terrain...I fly a lot over Orbx's NZSI/NZNI...

You've lovely pictures here (especially those for NZMF)!

Hey thanks, I particuarly like how the people around the airport change at different date/times.

Like at 11S where at certain times of the year deer graze next to the runway and even cross over it, usually at an inappropriate time.

Cheers
