Strange Problem

Featured Replies

I am sorry if this isn't in the right spot, I wasn't sure where else to post but I need a little help.

For the past week or so I have noticed that any add on from Latinvfr, Flightbeam and DD have black scenery. Now I can temporarily fix this issue by reinstalling said scenery and it will work. It will only work for one scenario of P3D then on the next load up go back to being black. The area's that are back is the taxi ways, terminal buildings and apron. The land class remains unaffected. I am using ORBX base pack, NA land class and HD tree's. I feel like an insertion point is wrong or something is causing the add ons to go black once I exit P3D. Like I said I can temp fix this for one scenario by reinstalling the scenery I want to use but then it goes black and remains black on next load up. I have reached out to the developers and they have not been able to find a cause. I know it's on my end since three different developers add ons are doing this not one. Any help is appreciated.

If you're seeing the buildings, and they're black, it means that they are loading, but the textures are not being applied.

Is this 32 or 64-bit P3D?  Where (what directory) is it installed?  What are your system specs, in particular RAM and VRAM?

P3DV4 64, not sure on the ram or vram but I have had these add ons and this computer for years it just recently started doing it. Could my OS be deleting  texture for some reason?

I hid your re-post of this issue--please do not post multiple threads covering the same issue.

In your rehash of the issue, you mentioned that you are using a GPU with only 3GB of VRAM.  Given that new data point, I suspect that you're running out of available VRAM, keeping some of the textures from loading.  3GB isn't a whole lot, especially when using higher-end airport add-ons.

As to the sudden onset, it could be that a setting change (e.g. 4K vs 2K max texture size) or even a driver change could be pushing you over the line where you were only close to the ragged edge before.

Nothing has changed regarding settings or an increase of add ons over the past two years. I misspoke I have 16GB of VRAM. I personally believe my computer is either corrupting the files or they are being deleted.

P3D alters the configuration after 'seeing' new add-ons. So it's possible P3D itself makes a change that makes the textures unavailable. I would strip the sim back to stock and then inspect one of the addons to see if that scenery is stable. Then move on carefully with each addon.

VRAM is Video RAM--the memory mounted on your video card.  I am not aware of any mainstream video card with 16GB of VRAM...they range from 2GB on the low end to 11GB for the high end of the consumer space, with a very few exotic cards sporting VRAM above 11GB (as high as 24GB).

You most likely have 16Gb of system RAM, not VRAM.  You said you had a 1060--they come from nVidia with either 3GB or 6GB of VRAM.

Many add-ons have installers that make changes to the settings in the sim when they are executed--the most likely one I can think of would be changing the max texture size to 4K to take advantage of a scenery's hi-res textures.  Some aircraft add-ons (like the FSL Airbuses) also use runtime configurators/optimizers that make changes to graphics settings (AA type/level, mesh resolution etc).

Checking for deleted files in a scenery is easy enough...after re-installing, make a copy of the relevant scenery's folder, and if the problem reappears, compare the copy to the active scenery folder to see if something has changed or disappeared.

With complex systems and lots of add-ons, users around these forums show a predilection to avoid changing anything in the setup. First of all, the setup isn't working, so something must change anyway. Finding the answer quickly requires elimination of possibilities or variables in the system. We know that P3D works OK so that's a good test of any machine right there. Generally a first stab test might be to simply uncheck most add-ons in the P3D menu Add-ons page (not the Scenery page) to eliminate a large number of possible problems.

Ok I will give this a shot, thank you.
