Hi All,

I am thinking about ways to improve immersion sensations in the cockpit I plan to build.  Has anyone ever thought about a motion seat?  I know you can have speakers under the seat to give you a sensation of rumbling across the tarmac but what about a seat that actually moves somewhat, to give you a sensation of being forced back into the seat when accelerating or tipping you forward when braking? I appreciate that it won't be able to move that much due to space constraints.  I was thinking it could move to simulate turbulence as well maybe?  It would sure be alot cheaper than a full motion simulator!

Any thoughts appreciated, including if I'm being completely pie in the sky!

To have such moving seat it would be highly unrealistic, as pilot seat never moves due to plane acceleration or braking.

It would be awkward feeling when u suddenly start to pull the yoke because ur seat moved back :-)

I agree however I am wondering if the smallest of movements might give a sensation of being pressed back into the seat?  I am talking about the seat pivotting backwards over a central pivot point rather than actually moving back laterally.  Maybe I could experiment with this.  Also the seat wouldn't pivot backwards when pulling on the yoke (pulling back on the yoke and climbing in an aircraft presses you into the bottom of the seat rather than the back) only when accelerating or banking at high speed (which I wouldn't be doing)

It would depend on your budget, you would need a very strong motor and sturdy base to mount your seat, which otherwise you would not have needed. However if we are going down the rabbit hole then so be it.

We would need to go both forward and backwards. We would need perhaps a load requirement of 100kgcm+++, enough torque and movement after powered of at least 1m/s to simulate the movement adequately. You would need to decide whether to pivot or slide the chair, pivoting would require a better motor and more work. Sliding it would take more of the load off the moving parts. You could pivot one side at a time with 4 legs or pivot all from 1 central leg in the middle of the chair. I think if you have a limited budget sliding the chair left and right may be more achievable.

The practicalities of getting movement in the seat from inputs could be hardware fixable depending on how pedantic you want to be. You could add switches to the yoke, speed break or other controls to activate seat movement without any coding needed.

Seat movers are already common in simracing. I have a NLR v3 motion for my racing setup and it works really well. Even better when using VR. The platform manager supports all the major flight sim titles as well. There are other manufacturers who built seat movers too.  I'm very happy with the NLR V3. One thing I will say about any type of motion - Less is more! Being thrown around like a ragdoll is only fun in the rollercoaster sims
