slow down

Recommended Posts

Hi,

While I know this is a bit subjective I have a feeling my system has slowed down recently.

I've not added any hardware and not added anything in the way of software, so my suspicions are with windows 10

It is like before a program will launch all the files are checked. So i'm thinking something in defender or something similar. I'm not that familiar with the workings of windows, are there any things I can look for, or check and see if my suspicions are correct or anything I can do to speed up  programs starting.

AV wise I've not got anything on system now because I started getting problems with Kasperski  so I got rid of it. and now only have defender

any advice/help would be great thanks

I’m not at my computer at the moment, but I believe Defender will do a system file scan on startup. I don’t think the scan is done on every startup, but is more likely to happen on first boot if the computer has not been run for several days. I believe you can change the automatic scan time and interval in the settings screen for Windows Security.

It might also be doing a scan of various program files when a program is opened. You can define exclusions in the Defender settings to tell it to never scan certain drives or folders.

My P3D and X-Plane installations are each on their own dedicated drives (drives E: and F:), I have excluded both drives from virus scanning entirely, as well as the Documents folder, where all the various add-ons for P3D are stored (those that use the new add-on.xml method).

Has the slowdown started since you got rid of Kasperski?

It could well be MS Defender then as it affects system performance a little more than Kasperski does. Take a look here: https://www.av-comparatives.org/tests/performance-test-october-2019/
