I thought to suggest a new way of handling the ELC on 747-8 if SDK is still limiting from direct interaction. 
Just like the way it is done on the 777 when pop-up mode is disabled. FO press the checklist key, user clicks on items as the FO reads through it. Some checklist will not even require User’s interaction such as BEFOR, AFTER TO CKLST and LANDING CHKLST,

Interesting idea, but it's sticky.  Best to just leave it to the user.
