fsx BLOAT....

Featured Replies

In looking around FSX for clues as to why it's PORKED itself, I noticed a rather disturbing tendency for FSX to create alot ofempty folders. In the "Documents and Settings.....FSX" folder where the fsx.CFGlives, there is also a folder called "SimObjects". Upon openingthat folder, to my surprise, I found 344 empty folders. Each emptyfolder had the name of not only the AI Aircraft folders that I broughtin from FS9 but all the various FSX "objects"...for example:VEH_water_sailboat1_smVEH_water_sailboat2_smVEH_water_sailboat3_sm...VEH_Car_Mini1_Black_smVEH_Car_Mini1_Blue_sm..Veh_Air_SewageTruck_sm <---appropos for this SIM, IMOVEH_Air_SupplyTruck_sm..WaterDropJust what purpose do these EMPTY folders serve? Granted, they'renot taking up alot of HD space...just cluttering the directorystructure!Along with this is the new practice of placing entries in thefsx.CFG file for each occurance of a gauge that is to be designated"Trusted". Each entry contains the full path to the gauge plussome MS generated coding appended...in short, a LONG text string. In FS9 I have several THOUSAND gauges and if all those that weren'tMS generated were "noted" by a text string in a CFG file, the cfgwould soon become too unwieldly to edit with notepad.I can see this scenario developing now in FSX.FSX seems to even need to add their own default gagues to the list.here's that section of my fsx.CFG after only loading a couple ofdefault FSX aircraft plus a couple of FS9 A/C I imported.I don't know WHY FSUIPC4 needed to be listed twice.[Trusted]K:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesMicrosoft Flight Simulator XModulesFSUIPC4.dll.iriencquibcbrbanrbwqtlitnwikrebzrcuritqi=1K:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesMicrosoft Flight Simulator X SDKSDKEnvironment KitTraffic Toolbox SDKtraffictoolbox.dll.hhrwrenhhzlbukkhkoewwrwoblwlilciccratohq=1K:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesMicrosoft Flight Simulator X SDKSDKEnvironment KitSpecial Effects SDKvisualfxtool.dll.iiqwuitnarrrucirakhibltttecrtrrtqabzkqrl=1K:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesMicrosoft Flight Simulator XModulesFSUIPC4.dll.tqnouwkhbalakbthaqcqqctwwalrthekeetuoquz=1K:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesMicrosoft Flight Simulator XSimObjectsAircraftLockheed L049A ConstellationpanelF16.GAU.qwcnzrlwuzhwkbirwneiaiuiiltuacrtboeeiouw=2K:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesMicrosoft Flight Simulator XSimObjectsAircraftLockheed L-188panel.testF16.GAU.qwcnzrlwuzhwkbirwneiaiuiiltuacrtboeeiouw=2K:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesMicrosoft Flight Simulator XSimObjectsAircraftLockheed L-188panel.testl-188.GAU.abrqniiibqqiitkazwblcqheioolzltriuelkkrn=2K:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesMicrosoft Flight Simulator XGAUGESBendix_King_Radio.DLL.bontiuiiiebquteeolozeinlucnqlzhnellowqho=2K:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesMicrosoft Flight Simulator XGAUGESKingAir.DLL.ueqawlezzqeqlobuirtinahtohhzabzztnhzanor=2K:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesMicrosoft Flight Simulator XGAUGESCessna172.DLL.toznobweebhlcnbwzcectoewkhetzkzotkwatlqn=2K:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesMicrosoft Flight Simulator XGAUGESKingAir_Radio.DLL.kabollnhkqqwtouhentteeuwiktleqttrzkkwzkr=2K:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesMicrosoft Flight Simulator XGAUGESMagnetic_Compass.DLL.qqwitlkrbciteorthnkhbqbrhqkuuuuueokzaoqr=2K:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesMicrosoft Flight Simulator XGAUGESF16.GAU.uuczrzznzuuwqtkbllnqqrbqbwtckiiqlcocwtca=2K:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesMicrosoft Flight Simulator XGAUGES737-400.DLL.brktzkzriknzoltozohnhqnbcwrkicttcuruhcct=2As you can see, that's alot of characters...and just a few aircraft.I have, in one of my FS9 installs, over 700 aircraft. I shudderto think of what the fsx.CFG is going to look like 6 months downthe road...assuming it stays on my hard drive that long.I'm becoming more and more disappointed in MS's efforts with thissupposedly ground-breaking release... ". . . In looking around FSX for clues as to why it's PORKED itself,. . . " Does that mean what i think it means?:-hah

The folders are for aircraft states. If you fly one of them, there will be a .cfg inserted with the accumulated time... i.e. accumulated_time=3.569865. I think this is great since now each aircraft will finally remember the times. As for your other question - for one, you are importing aircraft that were DESIGNED for FS9 into FSX. Search the forums for Trusted in the subject title, there was a thread here last week on it.duttonhttp://dutton.fsblogger.com/

Search the>forums for Trusted in the subject title, there was a thread>here last week on it.>>dutton>http://dutton.fsblogger.com/ Oh, I do understand that FSX keeps track of engine times on the aircraft that I fly in that set of folders but do you want to explain the presence of say:HumpbackWhaleANI_elephant_walk01_smANI_GiraffeWalk_Mature_smBucketVEH_Larrys_schoolbusthose folders? Or all the folders for the AI aircraft. Or thevehilcles and boats? None of them have accumulated any "enginetime" and I've seen them flying, driving and sailing in the sim.The inclusion of all those extraneous items in that folder isjust plain ludicrous! As to the [Trusted] stuff, I KNOW what it's there for. I just question the logic, or lack thereof, of placing that stuff inthe fsx.CFG file in the form that it's in and cluttering it up.Seems to me it would be better suited for a .BIN file, just asthe logbook, which is now a .BIN file is more suited to a .TXT file.I suspect MS made the logbook a .BIN to discourage their "newmarket" of gamers from forging flight times in search of "rewards".Another absolute waste of programming time and $$, IMO.The deeper I delve into FSX the less appealing I find it... >The inclusion of all those extraneous items in that folder is>just plain ludicrous!Tell that to the developers of Unix/Linux who have a single file and/or directory for what amounts to every possible item in the computer. Do you need a file system object for every nook and cranny of the system? Probably not. Is it an effective way of structuring the system? Indeed!Perhaps the objects listed in the offending directory are all of the same class of object in the MSFS engine? That's what it looks like to me. None of them are static scenery - it's all objects that are manipulated either by the user or by the sim AI. (They seem to corraspond to the FSXSimObjects tree in your actual simulator install directory) Because of this, the sim generates a user-level set of files for monitoring them. This isn't bloat - this is a structured, organized way of classifying sim objects for use in the game! I'm not saying you should turn a blind eye to it, but turn a blind eye to it! They don't take any space above and beyond their contents (which in the case of non-airplane objects seems to be nil), and they don't impact performance - they account for structure. Besides... how often do you actually browse in the Application DataMicrosoftFSXSimObjects folders? Probably pretty rarely.FYI: My {Application DataMicrosoftFSXSimObjects} folder is taking up a WHOPPING 585 BYTES. That is bloated enough to fit the same exact directory structure on a floppy disk 2300 times....Organized programming and data layout is certainly NOT unappealing. -Greg

Greg, thank God there are at least a few people here with some knowledge rather than the usual 'experts' professing to know why a program as enormously complicated as FSX may happen to run slower than they expected.
