Alienware Intel based replaced with Alienware AMD?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I'd really appreciate some opinions.  I currently have an Alienware Aurora R5 which has an i7-6700K, GTX1080 and 16gb of 2133mhz memory.  I am not able to upgrade anything on the system except for the storage which I have already done.  It does a good job with P3D but I believe it may be time to replace it.  I use it with a Dell U3415W monitor which runs 1440p.

A friend shared the following possible replacement... Alienware Aurora R10 Ryzen which has a 3900X, 5700RX and 32gb of 2933mhz memory.  Most importantly it has some upgrade possibilities and much newer hardware so hopefully better performance for P3D and FS2020.

I have always stayed with nvidia/intel so this would be a big change but the price is in the budget.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Regards,

Dan

Excellent upgrade. Try and go for higher clocked memory up to 3800mhz, though not THAT important, but Ryzen loves fast memory. You will be very happy with the system.

You should bear in mind one thing with a switch from NVidia to AMD if you are using P3D V5, and that is the Dynamic Ocean feature introduced in P3D V5, which requires NVidia Waveworks 2.0 to function. Theoretically AMD could either license it, or create something similar with does fancy waves via DX12 which P3D might then support, but at the moment AMD cards cannot do water as well in P3D as NVidia cards can. If you are more concerned with flying than sailing boats in P3D V5, then you can basically ignore this factor because the sea still looks pretty good on an AMD card.

Other than that, I always use AMD cards, and I've never had any issues with FSX or P3D caused by that decision.

Hi Chock,

At this point I will only be using P3Dv4 and FS2020.

Thanks for the heads up about the dynamic ocean feature in v5 though!
