THE REAL DEAL: Patch or no Patch?

Featured Replies

We know there will be a patch to upgrade FSX to a DX 10 version. Many people have problems with their performance. Microsoft has to do something: Release a Patch! So will there be coming a patch to solve the problems of the Performance?Microsoft has to know about the problems, or not?

At the very least there should be a patch incorporating all the tweaks that the commuity has already figured out!

DX10 has two new important hardware features, geometric shader and texture streaming (I think that's what it is called). If you are familiar with 3D programming, you will know these two features will increase the performance dramatically. If the ACES team wanted easily patch the DX9 version for DX10 and have great performance. These features had to be implemented in the DX9 version of FSX, but in software. That might explain the performance issue many people are having.

>We know there will be a patch to upgrade FSX to a DX 10>version. Many people have problems with their performance.>Microsoft has to do something: Release a Patch! >>So will there be coming a patch to solve the problems of the>Performance?>>Microsoft has to know about the problems, or not?I'll eat my hat (if I had one) if MS don't release a general patch with the Vista update.

The patch for Flight Sim performance has always been...A new computer system! And of course tweaks discovered by the community, and now, tweaks announced on here and on blogs by ACES team members.Well, the FS9.1 patch(which took a long #### time to arrive) partially fixed the known autogen performance problem with that version of the sim.Have you discovered an acutal BUG in FSX that relates to poor performance Daveje? If not, then I wouldn't expect that MS will make a patch that has an 'FSX lite' option.---------------------------------------What I would kind of like to see, is several patches(like maybe three or four) released over the life of the sim that fix things and/or spruce it up a little. Not one single patch that takes an entire year to be developed and released. Just a wish of mine, nothing more.Regards,Jim

ADDITIONAL LICENSING REQUIREMENTS AND/OR USE RIGHTS.a. Additional Functionality. Microsoft may provide additional functionality for the software. Other license terms and fees may apply"Note the words FEES Folks.... Just like SOME add-on developers are charging for alleged feature updates, MSFT has now given themselves the out to charge you down the road. Doesn't mean they will, but it's there, isn't it ....Oh and guess what, it wouldn't surprise me any to see some of these same developers then charging yet again once DX10 arrives....For more than a few, it's all about the money folks.... And don't think it isn't...

Hi there, and for more than a few, it's all about who can offer the most breathless conspiracy theory ;-)It's comforting to know, sonar5, that you don't have to charge money for your work, whatever you do. I assume the developers and MS can rely on you to volunteer a few weeks or months of 12-hour shifts then?As for patches and enhancements to FSX, I too would guess that the most "convenient" time for ACES (in terms of combining effort, testing, and distribution) will be the release of the VISTA/DX10 upgrade. Cheers, Holger

>For more than a few, it's all about the money folks.... And>don't think it isn't...>IMO, if it's what you do for a living, then you need to get paid. Simple as that. If it's a hobby, and perhaps you have plenty of cash from other sources(insurance settlement, inheritance, etc) to maintain lot's of spare hobby time, and then given away freely, then fine. But, I expect to pay for services (and yes, I usually do prefer payware), when the developer has moved past the hobby stage as many have. I've been in business for myself for nearly 25 years, and need the money like the majority of people do . It's against my instincts to believe that others should support my & your hobby freely, if their living depends partially or fully on it.Another freeware versus payware debate :D L.Adamson
