Unusual problem w/1st flight following system boot...

Featured Replies

Hi all, I got FSX on Oct 17th and love it with all my heart and soul despite having already encountered the dreaded "Unable to authorize" error followed by a reinstall ending in the even more dreaded Error 1722 at the end of disc 2 followed by a rollback. Had to wipe the drive and reinstall XP to fix that, of course...Well I'm having a problem, actually this was around before having to reformat/reinstall, just wondering if anyone else has seen anything like this and if so, what to do to fix it.Basically, if I cold-boot my computer, fire FSX up for the 1st time, get in a plane (typically the 172) and fly from an airport (typically Seattle/Tacoma Intl) I'm getting a comfortable 10-14 fps while sitting on the runway, and 15-30 fps shortly after takeoff. That's all well and good, I can deal with it ;)But problem is, within a couple minutes after takeoff the fps changes dramatically. Goes to an absolutey, unbelievably awesome 1 - 2 fps!!! :( You've never seen a slideshow like this, and believe me you don't want to! Don't matter where I fly to, once the frame rates tank, they don't improve even if I turn away from the heavy-duty scenery and fly in a direction where I was bumping 30fps before. If I quit out of FSX totally, but don't reboot the system, then restart FSX I can fly with good fps all night. Seems to be just on the 1st execution of FSX after booting my computer that this happens. This has happened at Seattle and LAX, haven't tried anywhere else yet.Don't see that my system could be the problem, it's pretty kick-####:XP Pro SP2 (clean install, only FSX, CH Manager, TIR4, ZA Pro, AVG Free installed)DFI Lanparty NForce4 moboAMD Athlon FX-60 @ 2.81gHz2gb Corsair PC4000 Platinum2x XFX 7900GTX @ 690mHz SLITrackIR 4 Pro, Alpha3 driversCH Yoke & PedalsAnybody else seeing this or know how to fix it?DH

I can't help with this problem directly but I have the same specs except I have a TrackIR 3 and I don't have the problem. So that leaves the hardware out. Some thoughts; other (non FSX) background processes kicking in, FSX setup conditions etc. Try flying somewhere else and see if it repeats. Checking the tuning topics.Sorry I can't be of more help but I think that it will be machine specific.I too had a weird problem where FSX just wouldn't load sometimes (error messages about starting some programs) but if I got to the startup page all went well. I ended up pulling what is left of my hair out before discovering that I hadn't formerly removed the FSX DEMO from my machine. The fix was pretty obvious although it cost me another load of FSX followed by a full defrag all OK since.:)PS I hate admitting that I am a fool in public still they tell me it is character building.;)

Your computer should definitely run fsx.The only weakness I see might be the system memory. You could have gotten 6400 instead of 4000.When you have this problem is your disk light real busy?Do you have a permamently sized swap file?I am not familiar with the TIR4; you could try a test and have it unplugged. What are ZA Pro and AVG?

Yellowjack, don't worry about "can't be of more help", any input is welcome! But I don't think it's an issue with background processes, last time I got the 1-2fps I went back to the desktop w/FSX still running and ran Task Manager, cpu utilization was at 0-2%. Nothing going on, yet when I went back to FSX I was still getting 1-2 fps. Besides, as I said if I fire up FSX, let the frame rates bottom out, quit then start it up again, all seems to be well. That is strange to say the least. Kinda doubt the background stuff is keeping track of how many times I've fired up FSX ;) Basically something is going on but I don't have a clue what...DH

Yep it's definately weird Waldo!Haven't really noticed the disk light but I don't think there was anything going on. System is watercooled and QUIET, think I would have heard the disk grinding. But I'll check next time it happens.Swap file is set for min 2046mb, max 4092mb. Swap is on C:, where FSX is installed. 173gb free on drive. Defragged with PerfectDisk 8.0 following reinstall of FSX night before last.I'll try with TIR unplugged but doubt that is it.ZA Pro = ZoneAlarm Pro firewallAVG = AVG AntiVirus by GriSoft.DH

OK here's a followup.Waldo, no disk light activity at all while this is going on. Everything nice and quiet. Still, less than 5 minutes out of LAX I was back to 2fps max, where I was getting 15-25 before! This time I shut down FSX, restarted it, and flew the same flight with same conditions and it did it again :( Within 5 minutes back to 1-2 fps.I got curious and went to Settings/Display/Scenery and pulled ALL the sliders to the left, hit OK and was getting a whopping 38fps (I'm capped at 38). Then put everything back where I usually have it, clicked OK and after everything reloaded, I was able to complete my landing back at LAX with a nice 20-25fps.I don't know sh*t about this stuff but I think it was reloading the textures that did it. I'm thinking after flying for a bit, something is getting totally trashed with respect to the textures, and that is what's killing my frames.FWIW, I don't have any texture mods installed right now.DH
