FSX and Vista RC1

Featured Replies

Hi,Is anybody using FSX and Vista RC1? (or, what are your experience with RC1).Is it worthwhile to install this pre-release version of the operating system? Thanks,Jim

Due to concerns about activation, I put off doing this, though I might in "trial" 30 min mode (RC2, but probably not a big difference for FSX).I thought vista was OK, but if it really is going to allow only two "device" installs I might rethink it.scott s..

Jim:I have been using FSX with RC1 and RC2. The experience is horrible. Either its the video drivers or the fact that Vista is a RC. Nonetheless I DO NOT recommend it!Now, with that said, FS9 runs insanely on Vista RC2. With FSX and Vista I am experiencing 20 second pauses, stuttering, constant HD activity, blurry textures, et al. BUT! Vista KICKS BUTT, is very stable, is compatible with most major sw titles and mainstream hardware. For me as long as FS9 runs I'm good. I figure that after release and a DX10 card, FSX will come into its own.Hope this helps!

This is interesting. FSX works better in Vista RC1 than on XP, for me.I have both Vista and XP installed (seperate drives) and FS9 and FSX on both OS's. I'm surprised myself that FSX works better on vista and I believe though that it has something to do with the fact I never did get around to installing new video drivers for my ATI X800XT on vista. Vista came with 7.15.11 drivers. Not sure why these are better. ?? FSX on XP is terrible with the recent ATI video drivers installed. All the VC panels are blurry and it doesn't run as smooth.Still experimenting :-)

I've tried fsx on vista rc2 and lets just say it doesnt run very well. its done a pretty good job of putting me off vista all together I'm using the ati rc1 drivers which are touted as the best stable for any manufacturer on vista.Basically fsx takes ages and mostly crashes out when you try to do anything, a complete waste of time imo.Funny because the demo ran quite well (stability wise) under vista. In summary, my experience is dont bother trying it.

Hi,Thank you to everybody for your feedback. I went ahead and decided to experiment with Vista RC1 (I guess the RC2 download has been closed for a while). For now, things are stable...both ATI and Creative had beta Vista drivers.FSX is slow (for now), but I experienced the same under Windows XP and just needed to do some tweaking.I'll see if things remain stable - FSX is the only application I have installed.~ Jim

Like I said, I didn't install any drivers. Whatever was on the initial install is what's there. Although I wouldn't suggest they are any good as videos played in Media Player are playing at about 1 frame per 2 seconds. Terrible !!Why FSX is running better without drivers is a mystery. Some time today I will give the new ATI drivers a try. I'm guessing it will mess things up from what I'm hearing.

Not quite sure WHY - but I seem to detect an aroma here somewher

Well i think this is a clue to the whole sorry mess, it doesnt use any drivers properly.

>Not quite sure WHY - but I seem to detect an aroma here>somewheromg i think you're right batman

I installed the new Catalyst Beta Driver for Windows Vista RC1 and I think FSX works reasonably well. Now I'll try and see, if I can get it to work better on XP. :-)

Well i used these drivers and the only way it would even get going was in full screen mode and even then it crashed bringing the whole system down.Mind i am using dual monitors, i don't suppose you are.

Since I am still on Win2K, so Vista RC1 is the only option I have for running FSX and both the Demo and the retail version of FSX. Both run great, but only after intalling Nvidia's Beta Vista drivers. I am currently running FSX in trial version to avoid any future problems with activation.
