FSX CTD, tried just about everything

Recommended Posts

Hello,

This is my first post here, and I'm hoping for some guidance. At the bottom of the post, I'll attach my two latest crashes (both within a minute of each other when trying to fly on VATSIM this morning) and all modules installed. For the last 3 weeks, I've been wracking my head around crash to desktops. It is my speculation that either the last windows update or graphics driver updates have borked the FSX experience. I currently have no issues with FS2020 and vPilot, however, and I have no modules installed for that sim anyways.

Anyways, I have gone through the AVSIM troubleshooting, scoured the forums for answers that there seems to be 1,000 too many variables for any one persons setup to change a CTD from one user to the next... So I've essentially tried just about all I can find and research. I've rebuilt and rebuilt the config files, exe.xml's, dll.xml's, scenery.cfg, changing sliders to minimum, etc etc. I've also tried my hand at disabling my overclock (which I knew was a far reach since none of my other apps, programs, or anything else has had any issue and stress testing has been stable for 12 hours of operation, but I tried it anyways), I've also reinstalled windows all to no avail. I've added modules, one at a time, reinstalled FSX, and tried again. I finally found out the windows compatibility mode made it much more stable when running as admin with windows 8 compatibility. I had fewer crashes at random like I have had before, but I'm nearing my wit's end now as every time a crash happens when getting ready to pushback, or halfway through a flight, after landing, I'm just at a point where I don't want to touch it until 12 hours later when I finally cool off for a bit. Anyways, even though windows 8 compatibility mode made it more stable, I'm still getting crashes. FSX-SE, latest version as Steam keeps it up to date, is the FSX I'm using.

I know it's a lot, but I really don't know what else to do.

Thanks in advance,

Spencer

Hello,

It is my speculation that either the last windows update or graphics driver updates have borked the FSX experience.

That´s correct. Two major points on that. First, the former NVidia driver had a compatibilty issue with Win 10 on some setups. This should has been solved with the latest driver from NVida. Second part is that with the last 2 or 3 update rounds Microsoft has several NET.Runtime updates implemented. Because of this. it´s a good idea to re-install the SimConnect client becasue it can be corrupted on some setups. The same meaning is for ASConnector if you use AktiveSky.

If you use OrbX, it´s also a good idea the run the verify installation option to make sure that no textures are corrupted.

At least clear the shader cash and the scenery index is a mandatory routine if you have touched the graphicsettings and/or the scenery

Have you tried the beta version FSX:SE?

In your Steam Library menu, right-click on FSX:SE, choose properties, on the Beta tab opt into the beta. After installing choose to verify the local files. After that make sure to install all the SimConnect clients that might be required: FSX:SE beta only installs the FSX:SE beta 10.0.63003.0 (6.2.63003.0) and XPACK 10.0.61259.0 (6.2.61637.0), so you might also include SP1 10.0.61242.0 (6.2.61355.0) and possibly RTM 10.0.60905.0 (6.2.60905.0). In the folder "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\FSX\SDK\Core Utilities Kit\SimConnect SDK\LegacyInterfaces\FSX-SP1" run SimConnect.msi and in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\FSX\SDK\Core Utilities Kit\SimConnect SDK\LegacyInterfaces\FSX-RTM" run SimConnect.msi.

I would choose to ignore DLC for the time being, uncheck all the DLC entries in the DLC tab before installing.

I would ignore running with any addons at all first to check that the simulator works OK without CTD. Then I would add one at a time so that I can eliminate the problem  down to an addon.

Also before adding any scenery I might also add the Modify Allow permission to the Users group on the folder: "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\FSX": In Explorer right-click on that folder and choose Properties, Security, Edit, in the top pane highlight the Users (MyComputer\Users) group, and in the lower pane check Modify Allow.

After that I would add other apps and addons one by one checking each time for the CTD.

The CTD might be caused by an addon that interfaces with the desktop.
