October 3, 20205 yr I'm back flight siming again and I'm on my favourite aircraft the BN-2 Islander from Flight1. I'd like to fly it on instruments, without using the GPS. After a bit of poking around I have got the NAV radios to work with NDBs and the Radio Magnetic Indicators but I would like to get the HSI to work. I assumed the HSI would be slaved to the NAV1 radio but this is limited to frequency range in KHz and the VOR beacons all seem to be in MHz. I can get the DME system to work and measure distance to the VORs as it seems to work in MHz frequency range. In the past I remember the HSI working but that was a while ago. I can get the HSI systems in the Cessna 172 and Maule (Standard FSX aircraft) to respond but their NAV radios work in the MHz range. All help gratefully received OM

I also enjoy flying it but I don't have any issues with the HSI which connects seamlessly to NAV1 whether it is tuned to a VOR or ILS frequency. You are correct when you say VOR frequencies are normally given in MHz but I'm not quite sure what you mean when you say the NAV1 "is limited to frequency range in KHz"? Perhaps you are referring to the frequency spacing which is often described in KHz? The Bendix King NAV1 in the Flight1 BN-2 has 50KHz spacing which means that the frequency can be altered in 50KHz increments. For example, if you have a frequency of 113.00 in your NAV1 STBY window, the next highest frequency you can select is 113.05MHz (a 50KHz increase), or if you lower the frequency it will be 112.95MHz (a 50KHz decrease). So if you tune the VOR frequency you want to use into the NAV1 STBY window and then use the frequency swap button to move that frequency to the USE (active) window all should be fully functional as far as your HSI is concerned. Hope this helps? Bill
October 4, 20205 yr Author Thank you . I have it sorted. I needed to pay attention to what it said on the panels. Part of my confusion was I thought the 2 ADF radios were the NAV radios. It was your comment about changing the frequency with the frequency swap button that made me look at what I thought was a comms radio to then realise it was a NAV radio. Indeed when I tune it in to the local ILS the HSI/ILS reacts immediately. Again thank you that was really bugging me OM
October 5, 20205 yr Glad you got it sorted OM. Enjoy flying the great little Islander! BTW if find you are flying it a lot and want even better sounds, I can recommend the payware BN-2 sound set by Synchro-Soft which is excellent and very realistic! Arezone also produce a BN-2 sound set but I have no experience of that. Bill
