Map zoom level seems random

Featured Replies

I couldn't find any topics about this issue, so presume nobody else is having it. I presume it's a bug as far as I can tell I have exhausted all options to prevent this from happening in the options menu.

The default zoom level which LNM jumps to when centering on the plane after 10 seconds seems to just be random. On some flights it jumps to a very small scale zoom level like 0.5nm, on others though it jumps to a very large scale zoom level like 200nm, on odd occasions it jumps to my preferred zoom level (usually around 3.7nm).

I have 3.7nm set in the options as the default zoom level when double-clicking on an object and when I do double click on an object it will jump to this zoom level, however after 10 seconds it will jump back to whichever random zoom level it happens to be preferring on that particular day.

Altering that ten second delay before jumping back to the plane doesn't help as all you're doing then is stopping it from following your plane at all. The only other setting I can see which might have a bearing on this is one that makes it automatically zoom out to the best level if the map isn't loading, but turning this off doesn't change anything so it isn't this.

I'm currently using Beta 3.60 but this problem also existed in the previous stable versions.

Personnally, I see the zoom level changing erratically when following a plane in FS2020. I tryed locking the soom level via the button an the zoom scale, but no sure this works.

The logic behind the default zooming is a bit more elaborated: https://www.littlenavmap.org/manuals/littlenavmap/release/2.6/en/OPTIONS.html#simulator-aircraft-icon-simulator-aircraft
Also look at the tooltips in the options dialog (hover mouse over checkboxes/text).

Default is to center aircraft *and* the next waypoint to keep both on screen. Minimum zoom is defined by aircraft speed and altitude so it does not zoom close to 0.5 NM at FL300, for example. But it zooms very close near approach (slow and low).

All this reverts back to default centering (zoom level does not change there) if there is no plan or if the aircraft is on ground.

Furthermore, the view allows you to move and zoom around the map with mouse, keyboard or whatever. If you leave the map alone it jumps back to the aircraft after given time period (options dialog).

MSFS is another story. I had to add workarounds since the simulator sends erratic positions via SimConnect while using the main menu in the sim. This should not appear in LNM.

But this just one of many aspects where MSFS is buggy like nothing else. It looks pretty, though.

Thanks for replying. So what you're saying is with previous simulators, LNM has adapted its zoom level to the speed and altitide of the aircraft, but currently isn't getting the right information from MSFS to do this reliably? That definitely sounds useful when it comes to taxiing, I'll just have to hope that this can be fixed in future.

The random coordinates come only if you're in the menu in MSFS. The aircraft in LNM jumped to coordinates around 0/0 (west coast before Africa) then.

LNM should behave nicely when flying or taxiing. At least this is what I see here.

Having tried it on a flight around Italy it remained at 14.7nm for the whole journey, including taxiing and landing. I was flying at around 3,000ft and around 100kts

You probably have "Center map on aircraft and next flight plan waypoint" off or didn't use a flight plan. Then it behaves as expected.

You can zoom in during flight (if above option is off) and LNM should keep the changed zoom.
