Reduce DLC/DEV work by equalizing SDK possible?

Featured Replies

Following thoughts came up this morning:

  • Subjective/opinion: Much Devs are working on MSFS products and releases
  • Lot Devs seem to prioritize MSFS products. This may also be related to the amount of work and therefor they can not do "both together

So I thought why? If the amount of work and resources are the bottleneck to do  the same Product "MSFS and P3D in the almost same timespan", could following not help them reduce the amount of work?

My thoughts/idea about this:

I assume the P3D SDK is much more evolved compared to MSFS SDK. So I also assume LM has "less work to do" to "equalize" their SDK by implementing "stuff" which can reduce work for DEVS so they can almost do the same product on both platforms in almost the same timespan due the reduced amount of work.

Note

  • This is only theory as I have no DEV Skills and DEV insights
  • I do not "study or analyze" the SDK of any platform, never did also
  • I would like to get some thoughts about this if I am right with my assumptions
  • I would not like to discuss which platform is "better" as I think it is "taste related"
  • I would like to discuss and get respectful feedback on this (especially be respectful to the DEVS, lots of them are great!!!)

it is just a thought. I am always interested to analyze processes and optimize them (maybe due my profession ;-)).

Because I think the most  DEVS have to "decide" on which path they hop on to probably raise income and probably mostly dependent on their resources. I also think lots of them would like to do both, at least I assume this.

Especially thoughts from 3. Party and those with SDK/DEV insides are welcome! But also others of course.

Thanks for sharing thoughts!

I think one of the issues is that P3D is DLL-based while FS2020 is WASM-based. Rob A had a post about this in the recent past. Because the architecture is different, 'equalizing' the SDKs would not be a useful effort IMO. And yes, the reason for Devs to choose MSFS is simply cash flow considering the drop in P3D-related sales. Umberto (Virtuali) and others have posted about this unfortunate fact.

I wouldn't call myself a third party developer but I've been working on developing some airport sceneries for the past few sceneries (of if only I could ever finish something...)

But, would you mind rephrasing your idea? I'm not sure what you are suggesting...

From my limited interaction with the MSFS dev mode, my feeling is that (1) MSFS is more limited in things, and so there is less work because for a number of things custom features simply cannot be modeled yet, and (2) the things that are there are much easier to do in MSFS because the tools are more intelligent. Case in point: ground poly with slopes. I have been wracking my brain on the best way to do this for my project in P3Dv5, because there is no 'communication' between the 3D model of the ground poly I'm making, and the AFCAD that lies beneath it. It seems as though making these work together is going to require a horrendous amount of back and forth to make sure the pieces fit together properly. Meanwhile in MSFS, the sim simple drapes the ground poly on top of the mesh, so you don't even need t worry about the specific elevations of your ground poly. You just need to make sure your mesh data is good. And fortunately, MSFS allows you to 'terraform' in-game, which is absolutely not possible in P3Dv5. With such tools, MSFS is just a much more pleasant working environment because you don't feel like you are fighting the sim, rather it helps you create whatever you want.

But again, I have only dabbled in MSSF developer mode briefly, so cannot fully attest to the correctness of what I'm saying... Also, this is all about scenery. Aircraft is a different subject...

I'm surprised you didn't do a search on "Rob WASM" which would yield the following thread (he has several posts here):
