747 and A320 Roll "Deadzone"

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I've got a weird control issue that seems limited to the 747 and A320. Basically I have a kind of "dead zone" in the middle of my roll control that makes it very difficult to control these aircraft.

In small aircraft (Cessna, Bonanza, King Air etc) my joystick gives a 1:1 correlation with the aircraft controls. This can be seen in the link below where I go from full left aileron to full right aileron on my joystick, and the yoke in the cockpit matches my input, i.e. immediate full to full deflection: https://imgur.com/a/uTFwlOR

However, in the 737 and A320 if I go full to full deflection from left to right on my joystick, I get a kind of slow dead patch in the middle where the yoke doesn't match the position of my joystick. I'm doing exactly the same thing with the joystick as for the smaller aircraft, i.e. instant full left to full right deflection, but as the in game yoke goes slows down/stops as it hits the middle before going to full deflection on the other side: https://imgur.com/a/QXsI7xq

The problem affects the roll axis only, pitch is fine. I'm using a Sidewinder FF2. My joystick sensitivity settings in game are default, i.e. linear response. I have no external programmes or other controllers running. I don't have any control assists enabled in the settings menu. The above examples were loaded one after the other with no changes to the settings in between.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this? It makes the aircraft very difficult to control, particularly on approach where small roll inputs are needed, there is a lag between the joystick and response that makes it very easy to over correct.

Thanks!

IIRC there is a deadzone setting for each axis?

All my deadzones are set to 0% on each axis. Looking at the control settings the simulator is detecting the input fine and tracks the position of my joystick in the settings menu perfectly. It's just when you jump in to the 747 there is a non linear response to the input as you go through the yoke being centered. As I say, it only affects the 747 and A320.

Is a 0% deadzone wise when flying with FD and autopilot?

Possibly not if you're concerned about triggering the autopilot disconnect, but for the purposes of fault finding it just helps to rule it out as the cause.

I haven't heard any suggestions on this so thought I'd try once more before giving up on the question! To give a bit more/new background:

In the controller set up screen, flight simulator accurately recognises the position of my Sidewinder FF2. Specifically, if I quickly go from full left to full right deflection this is shown correctly in the sensitivity graph for the X-axis: https://imgur.com/kEC2ru7

However, the response from the A320 side stick/ailerons lags behind my inputs. Doing exactly the same quick full left to full right deflection with my joystick, the A320 side stick slows down/stops as it goes through the neutral position: https://imgur.com/wlBumfG

This only appears to happen noticably with the A320 and B747 (i.e. larger aircraft). I also note that the lag is far more significant in the air compared to on the ground.
