ATC voice very weak. Almost inaudible.

Suddenly, the voice of the ATC from the control tower (not the pilot's) has become very weak, practically inaudible. This has happened suddenly and it does not change with the VHF signal degradation (ON / OFF).

What could have happened? Has the same thing happened to someone else?

Yes, I've had the same thing recently.  Seems to happen with only some controller voices.

When this happened to me recently, it turned out that I'd accidentally unplugged the middle speaker in my 5.1 set-up.

Has always been this way very faint. Only use the AI for comms as a result.
