I flew Washington - Las Vegas a while back. Arrived in Las Vegas for my conference and all three bags were missing. Never found to this day. Gone to some needy baggage handlers I guess. So yeah, this is "as real as it gets".

IRL they even lose the passengers from time to time - when the boarding gate info is wrong. Flight deck to ops: "Hey where are the pax?"  "Err we don't know, there is nobody at the gate but the flight is showing a full load today....!"

The Australian Army manage to lose an entire bridge for about 6 months not far from where I live.  Placed it during exercises then wandered off and forgot it was there.  They eventually found it and retrieved it, The locals knew it was there bur probably decided to take advantage of the easy access across the creek rather than report it.
