November 21, 200619 yr Hi Folks,I tried to perform a clean boot using Microsoft's procedure (article 331796)but had a problem with it.I clicked "Selective Startup" on the General Tab in msconfig.I unclicked the following in msconfig General Tab: "Process system.ini" "process win.ini" "Load Startup items" then on the Services tab I selected "Hide all microsoft Services" and the clicked "Disable All".Then I clicked OK and got the following error message: "System Configuration An access denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to log on using an administrator account to make specified changes"I am signed on as administrator and my system isn't connected to any network. My os is WinXp Media Edition.Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,
November 21, 200619 yr To be honest, as you are already stoppinf processes whcih meed to be running for the correct operation, I wouldn't try it. Use FS Autostart instead, as this can stop and restart any app, and allow you to try combinations of settings without the hassle of a reboot every time.Allcott

That is not advisable. Doing what you did will shut down services that are needed for normal functioning of the OS.You can pare down your XP install to 20-25 running services, and this does help with FS. But you have to do it selectively, and you have to realize that many services depend on other services to run.I would google search for "Windows Services" or something like that, because there are LISTS out there that show exactly what each process is, what it does, and then you can decide if you want to disable it or not. I used such a list to cherry-pick out unneeded services and was able to improve my FS performance somewhat. It's more important on low memory systems but can also help the high end a little. Some running processes rob valuable cpu cycles from us. We need all we can get, especially with FSX.RhettAMD 3700+ (@2530 mhz), eVGA 7800GT 256 (Guru3D 93.71), ASUS A8N-E, PC Power 510 SLI, 2 GB Corsair XMS 3-3-3-8, WD 250 gig 7200 rpm SATA2, CoolerMaster Praetorian Rhett 7800X3D ♣ 96 GB G.Skill Flare ♣ Gigabyte 4090 ♣ Crucial P5 Plus 2TB
November 22, 200619 yr Hi Rhett,I tried the Clean Boot based on a Microsoft article which said that a Clean Boot could help with running various games etc. and specifically mentioned FSX, Fs2004 and many other MS games. The article id is 331796 (last review Oct.23 2006). I installed FSAutostart yesterday and it seems to do a good job as well. Every little bit helps. I really like FSX especially after having applied various tweaks.Have a good one.
