January 28, 20215 yr About to rip my f****** hair out. With IFR flights I usually get the approach after my last waypoint. This example is KLAS to KSAN with the last waypoint being PSP VOR. When taking off it looked like rwy 27 was active in KSAN and had the (WT) G1000 set for the approach with “Lyndi” transition. All good, after PSP I was heading toward Lyndi...then I get the approach Rwy 9 with Gatto transition. Great... I go to select rwy 9 with Gatto, “activate”the approach and the plane makes a reverse turn back to PSP. Of course a minute later the PC locked up and I was PO’D!! On the way to Vegas with Danby being the last waypoint before I received the approach, same thing happened but that time I use “load” not activate. Plane reversed back to Danby before heading to the BLD transition.. Question, how do I select the approach where the transition should be the next waypoint I fly to. So with the flight into KSAN, after PSP and I get the approach to rwy 9, how EXACTLY do I select the approach so the plane flies directly to GATTO? Really appreciate any info on this.

This is a well documented issue with many discussions here about it. You must identify the IAF of the approach and activate the approach before arriving at your flight plan fix that comes before the IAF. That may have been PSP in your case. Another step to try when you forget and encounter this issue again is to go back into the Procedures page and activate the approach a second time. Sometimes that helps. It has been a headache to say the least. When you say I have to “ identify the IAF of the approach before arriving at flight plan fix that comes before the IAF.” That would be great except I get the approach from ATC after I reach my final waypoint. I was thinking in the situation I experienced, can I go “direct to” GATTO and then load the approach? There must be a better way. I have tried switching to the heading a/p from nav/gps, load the approach and “activate leg” to the IAF and still no joy. Best way is to KNOW the active runway at destination, set it up before takeoff, or at least before the last waypoint, and then no problems. Once in a blue moon I’ll get a CTD or lockup when I do too many inputs into the G1000 which is what just happened. Infuriating!
