Alaska: The Kenai Peninsula and Cook Inlet

Recommended Posts

Alaska: The Kenai Peninsula and Cook Inlet

The Kenai Peninsula is a large peninsula jutting from the coast of South Central Alaska. The peninsula extends about 150 miles (240 km) southwest from the Chugach Mountains, south of Anchorage. It is separated from the mainland on the west by Cook Inlet and on the east by Prince William Sound. The Kenai Peninsula has many glaciers in its eastern and southern areas. It is home to both the Sargent Icefield and Harding Icefields and numerous glaciers that spawn off them.

This is a continuation or part 2 that we ran a couple of weeks ago in these parts which concluded that trip at Seward.  In this subsequent excursion, we will commence our flight at Seward Airport (PAWD), explore most of the Kenai Peninsula and if time permits inspect the oil rigs/platforms in Cook Inlet before ending our journey on the mainland at Trading Bay, Alaska: Trading Post Production Airport (5AK0). ( 272 nm with nine landings along the way):

Airports along the route:  PAWD*-0AK7-2AK4-AK07-flyby/KEB, flyby/PGM, PASO*-PAHO-00AK-flyby/NIN, 5KS-PAEN-5AK0.

Aircraft:

The first half of this trip is mostly a secluded and off the beaten path routed via natural landmarks: high altitude glaciers, mountains, lakes and rivers on the east side of the peninsula then lower and more stable altitudes over manmade landmarks such as highways and towns on the western side of the peninsula. An aircraft that can travel @120-135 KTAS is ideal to view this terrain (low and a bit slower but that has the power to steeply climb and go up and over when necessary.

MSFS: xCub, Savage Carbon, Savage Grravel or not so STOL but also might work: DA40, VL-3, Pipistrel or Robin Cap10.

FSX/P3D: Maule M7, Super Cub PA-18, C185, DHC2 Beaver, DHC3 Otter, Zenith STOL type STOL aircraft.

Will be planning to run the Savage Grravel (https://flightsim.to/file/5061/savage-grravel-monster-truck-in-the-skies) but as always please feel free to use your aircraft of choice. (Of course at your own risk!)

Weather and Sim time:

Weather: Live if possible but Alaska weather is not exactly predicable so if live weather is not operationally possible, we can utilize the Broken or Scattered clouds preset (add 6-10 cm snow) to be able to fly yet have the "Alaska" feel!

Sim Start Time:  @1400 Local. (Dusk at end of flight)

Multi way pointed flight plans, pilot’s guide/detailed itinerary are available here.

Multiplayer Particulars:

Date and time: Wednesday, February 24, 2021. 1900 UTC

Teamspeak Server Address: ts.teamavsim.com

Norm, the download page for the Misty Moorings Oil Platform services scenery says it is not compatible with ORBX PAEN payware airport. Both are recommended scenery for this flight. Do you know what the incompatibility is? Fish jumping or something more serious?

The Oil platforms are compatible with both versions of PAEN: The default as well as the Orbx Payware version. (Just having a hard time get the wording changed on the web page to reflect).

Thanks. I installed all the scenery last night and could not see any conflicts.

I also installed the Bradley (sp?) Hydro Station as it appeared it was one of our stops.

Shopping for a fur lined leather jacket now.

PS: Sent a follow-up message to the RTMM webmaster and got the Orbx PAEN not compatible line removed from that scenery item. ("Bradley Lake Hydro").

Thanks Ted

While testing the flight plan airport sceneries I noticed that 00AK is not in P3D and probably not FSX. It is OK though as the airport location is in a flat field that is easily land-able (if your plane will stall) using your GPS and Little Navmap as guides. All the other airports looked great. However being in all the snow and ice I had to turn the temperature up in my house. Looking forward to this flight.

For Grravelators, there is a new Savage Grravel update that adapts to the new Asobo flight model "tweak"...to good effect. This is noticeably important here. The update also includes a parking brake toggle and a new livery. A similar update is available for the Savage Carbon as well.

Happily, the new version retains backward compatibility with the existing repaints by other authors. (I'll stay in the 2019 Alaska Raffle paint by USAFNukem.)

It takes so little to mess up teh whole interwebs eh? It's small wonder that Asobo, Microsoft, Orbx, Lockheed Martin et al make mistakes.

Now you've pointed out the bracket, it's bleedin' obvious! 😀
