Divebomber Approaches

Featured Replies

I'm having a fairly consistent (but not universal) issue with ATC holding off giving me reasonable descents, and instead waiting until I have to descend at 4-5k'/minute (or sometimes more) to reach the runway at the appropriate time.  Just last night, I was flying into Key West, and it kept me at FL190 (despite many requests for a lower altitude) until it issued the final approach clearance literally already within visual range of the airport.  I made it by cutting the throttle to zero, full spoiler extension, extending my gear way too fast, and eventually having to take over from the AP to "safely" make the runway, but I was falling like a rock to get there.

Frequently the descents are issued SO late that I literally CAN'T make the runway and have to do a missed approach and try again.

This is happening more with jets and turboprops (specifically the WT CJ4, and the TBM) that fly in the flight levels than with GA planes for which a cruising altitude may only be 8,000' to begin with.  I've also tried several different estimated descent rates with no help, though I'm more than willing to try whatever anyone might suggest.

So...  I can't be the only person who is dealing (or has dealt) with this, please if you have any ideas or suggestions, share with the class...

Thx,

Hmm, can't say I've encountered that issue. I've set my descent rate to 1500ft/m, and the P2A calculated TOD is usually pretty close to the TOD given by the VNAV in the WT CJ4 (that's the only aircraft I fly)...

Well, I'm on my way to Vegas right now (in the sim that is), so we'll see what it gives me.  I've found without an approach or STAR loaded, VNAV doesn't want to give me a TOD point, but I can't rule out user error with regard to that.  In fact, I can't rule out user error with regard to my baseline issue, either.  So I'm just gonna be patient and not do anything like assume approaches or something similar and let it just play out.

When you don't load an approach, do you at least select the runway in the approach page (which automatically creates an aligned  extension waypoint)? I've done this a few times, and when I set the altitude selector to the Rwy elevation I do get a TOD in VNAV just fine...

The last few flights it's behaved flawlessly.  I might have to try that Key West flight again to see if the same thing happens, as I did make several tweaks to the pilot2ATC settings, and I'm no longer putting SIDs or STARs in my flight plans, instead waiting for ATC to assign them instead.

@woodstock327 I have tried that, but not many times, but it didn't seem to help.  But in many ways I'm almost a P2A newbie all over again, as it got completely uninstalled during a recent issue that required a bare metal reinstall of windows, and only in the past week or so did I start with P2A again.  Next up on my hit parade is figuring out the whole windows voices thing again, I had it pretty dialed in, but that's now gone.

One thing at a time, I guess.
