Hi all -- I've posted here on occasion (am much more of a lurker); am hoping you can help me with the following. Added a poll, just to track feedback, if you feel so inclined!

I've been a casual simmer for the last 20-odd years, and bought my last PC in mid-2018 with the aim of running P3D smoothly. Relevant specs are as follows:

i7 8700K 3.7GHz
GTX 1080 Ti 11GB GDDR5
X32GB DDR4-3200 RAM
Running on an LG 32" monitor at 1440p

(for reference, it's this prebuilt model - I upped the RAM when I bought it.)

I participated in the MSFS Alpha and Beta, and bought the sim at release. I run on a mix of high settings (can provide more detail if needed), and don't use VR. After the most recent update, I noticed things getting a bit choppier, and between that and wanting to futureproof a little, am starting to wonder about upgrading.

So the initial question is whether it makes sense now, or if I should hold off for more advancements in GPU or other tech.

Looking at the above, I think a GPU upgrade would make the most sense, with my sights on the RTX 3080. Beyond the fact that they are super rare, I'm also wondering whether my CPU would be a bottleneck -- any thoughts on that front?

If the CPU is a bottleneck, and/or the GPU is too rare/expensive on its own, my other thought is to upgrade to a new build entirely. I've found one that has the following relevant specs:

i9 10900KF 3.7GHz
RTX 3080 10GB GDDR6X
32GB DDR4-3600 RAM

(likewise, it's this prebuilt model. Currently out of stock, but I've seen it come in and out of stock and would pounce on it if good).

The question on this build is if the gains in performance would be enough from my current setup to justify buying it. So I'd love to get the expert opinions on that as well -- thanks very much in advance!

You appear to have a nicely balanced system and the 1080ti is no slouch!

If you have money burning in your pocket, the proposed build sounds good, but I would be tempted to stick with what you've got a bit longer..  Run Windows task manager in performance mode while flying and check to see which component is getting maxed out.

If it is the GPU, you can try limiting fps to 30 (in NVI or RTSS) as a test..

The speed of your internet connection is another factor to look at BTW..

Thanks!  I tried limiting to 30 back when MSFS came out.  If I recall correctly, the option to do it in-game is locked to 60 because of the G-Sync feature on my monitor.

Yes -- on a separate partition, but I believe that it's of the same SSD.

That's okay then
