Whirlybird (and Narrative)

A very short flight from Duluth Sky Harbor to Duluth Int'l.  I wanted to give this bird a quick check out and I am pleasantly surprised.  Sure it's not Dodosim, but for a flight sim without helicopters - this is a good starting effort!

Started up also using the beta GTN 750 (also a good starting effort, not close to the RXP one which I miss so dearly).

Take off from the ramp not too difficult...  On warm Summer days you'll find a friendly dog roaming the airport.

My livery isn't native to this area but this route is extremely common for helicopters approaching Duluth from the E and SE.  This narrow stretch of land is Park Point.  To the right is Lake Superior, a massive body of freshwater.  To the left is Duluth/Superior Harbor (and even has two charted water runways).

I'm pretty disappointed in the green tinted Bing imagery in this area...and also that there is no Aerial Lift Bridge scenery (or maybe I've missed it!)  But it's a lovely place to visit - you'll see massive ships coming and going which traverse the Great Lakes and also the World.  Maybe we'll see virtual ones when Henrik's ships have inland waterway support.

Viewing more to the SSW - the small bluffs stick out pretty well.  The roads from "on top of the hill" going "down the hill" can be interesting during Winter.  Hopefully you have snow tires or 4WD.

View to the NE at the "North Shore."  This is the western shore of Lake Superior...and you can drive all around the lake if you choose. (I'd rather fly!)

I'm generally following this road - Mesaba Ave - a popular way to get from downtown to the Miller Hill area (lots of shopping and eateries)

I can see the tower!  (I used to work in the real one - it's a LOT shorter!)

And the tower sees me....

I'm aiming for taxiway A here...a common assignment, by the tower, for helicopters.  It's also east/west so it makes a great place to put helicopters and keep them south of the main RY 9/27.

Yes I hope someday the Bing data is updated.  But I did find the Aerial lift bridge (and some other MN landmarks) if anyone is interested: http://www.usscenes.com/flyinminnesota/

It's wonderful to have water towers and antennas again 51107500174_7723b55de0_o.pngdlh by Ryan Butterworth, on Flickr
