Good morning. I was just given the instruction to taxi to 04R, hold short at 04L.  Once I got to 04L, I couldn't figure out how to get clearance to cross 04L.  Eventually, I got cleared to take off 04L (which didn't match the original instructions).  Am I missing something?  Is there a specific way to get clearance to cross 04L ?

If you don't get cleared automatically to cross, just say:  "<CallSIgn> waiting to cross runway 04 left"

You should then get clearance to cross.
