Round the World Race - Team AVSIM needs you.

Recommended Posts

Interested in Joining Team AVSIM? If you are at all interested in helping Team AVSIM defend the title, please let us all know. The team needs pilots (especially European or Australian pilots) as there will be plenty of opportunities to fly. If you are an experienced FS pilot, then you can step right in. If you prefer, you can fly a few training missions or as a "wingman" to gain experience. And, of course, we need teammates to scout legs, find good weather patterns, carry out flight planning and help organize things. The race begins Saturday, February 17th, and will last 4 or 5 days (flying round the clock). The public team forum is located here: http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=show_topics&forum=227 If you would like to give this a go, please sign up below and someone will be in contact you via the forum PM system or via email if you post good email address. (Alternatively, please PM me or another one of the veterans and we'll get you going.) We'll get you to the private team forum, access to the server and TeamSpeak, and so on. All this is easy enough once you get started. (And you need not fly online if you prefer to fly offline.) Best,Jeff Williams(And the Team AVSIM veterans...)

Just a little bump up to the first page from another veteran (Ok, I'm not sure if I'm considered a veteran, but it sounds cool, so I'll just leave it like that ;D)It's a really fun race, and I hope everyone who reads this want to join in on the fun :DKlas

Hey everyone,As Jeff stated, this is a VERY fun experience. I'm a re-tread to Flight Simming after a LONG hiatus (last serious flying was FS2 on my old C64!) with only small dabbling with FS98, 2000, and 2004. I just got back into it with the release of FSX and even then, I quickly was reaching the "Ok, this is getting a bit boring just flying around from Atlanta to other places in the US..." mode. When I first heard about the race I thought I'd check it out and see if it's something I'd be interested in doing....Let me tell you, since I showed up for the first practice session online 3 weeks ago, I've done the most intense, fun, challenging and interesting flying of my "Virtual" career! The team has had me landing high performance aircraft on crappy tiny unlit airports in the middle of nowhere in bad weather conditions, navigating my way through mountain passes in the middle of the night with low clouds, pure IFR at <8000 Ft, and long stretches across the ocean. I've flown in areas of the world I NEVER would have bothered with otherwise, and seen some AMAZING views (like flying down in southern mexico at dusk, with the Atlantic off to my left, the Pacific to my right, stars just coming out and a nice pink sky as the sun is setting.)Likewise, the other people on the team have been EXTREMELY helpful in teaching me things I didn't know (like how to use ILS!) Everyone has been very nice, friendly, fun, and a pleasure to interact with. I can't wait for race day to put my skills up against those from other teams and contribute to (hopefully) continued success for AVSim. I've gotten more into Flight Simming in the last 3 weeks than I have been in YEARS because of this race. I'm waking up every morning with thoughts of approach patterns, routing plans, ILS frequencies, airport codes and engine restart proceedures! I even went and dropped $1200 in "extra" equipment for this race (namely 2 more monitors, a THX sound system, X-Fi card, buttkicker gamer, FSXGenesis Mesh, Cloud9 XClass for the world, and a number of payware aircraft!)I really hope you'll take the opportunity to join us. I don't think you'll be disappointed! As they say, "17000+ air miles, 5 days non-stop, and no jets!"--Mike

"I even went and dropped $1200 in "extra" equipment for this race (namely 2 more monitors, a THX sound system, X-Fi card, buttkicker gamer, FSXGenesis Mesh, Cloud9 XClass for the world, and a number of payware aircraft!)"Okay... to me, that implies that the AVSIM team cannot afford to loose (for your sake, anyway!). :)I am truly pleased that we can sponsor the team and that simmers can find true awakening (or reawakening as the case may be) to the hobby as a result. Good for you Mike and good luck team mate!

Well Tom, I'll tell ya, I *HATE* to lose! I'm a VERY competitive person and will be doing EVERYTHING in my power to make this race a success for AVSim. If that means I have to be up at 4am to take the baton because nobody else is available to fly, and I have to be at work at 8am, I'll get my butt out of bed and fly! If I have to go find some special aircraft and hack config files to make it work in FSX, so be it!I have the bug! The people at work think I'm crazy because I'm working double shifts next week so I can take race week mostly off. Seriously people, if you've been looking for some new challenge to boost your interest in Flight Simming, this will do it! Come join us and let's have some fun!(And BTW, just because that picture had a bunch of DC-3's, that doesn't mean you have to fly a DC-3 in the race! That was just kind of the team "victory lap" last year....)

Bumping it up to the top again to tell you that last years race journal is available from the library: http://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?CatID...misc&DLID=97590If reading that doesn't get you interested, I'm not sure what could :DSo read it, and then sign up for this years race :)Klas

To anyone who is on the fence about joining the AVSIM team for the race, I urge you to come on over. I'm a rookie this year and just wanted to let you know it is a lot of fun (and we've only been practicing)! It doesn't take long to get up to speed with what's going on and start enjoying this new level of flight simming. The veteran racers are a great help and more than willing to answer your questions and get you flying fast. The more the better so sign up! Its not too late.

I was a rookie last year and had a great time. It has been great to get on with such a nice group of helpful people with a passion for flight simulation. I have learned a lot, flown to parts of the world I would never have visited, and seen some incredible sites around the world. I have been anticipating the race for the entire year and look forward to helping out anyone who might be thinking of joining.
