MSFS Observations ... not a complaint

Featured Replies

Hello all,

Reading all about the woes and complaints with SU5, I have decided to pass on my experiences.

First of all, after renaming my Community folder and downloading the update, I found that I could not even access the programme. I could click on the Desktop Icon and it would start loading and then lock up.

I then decided, given my last three updates required an uninstall and follow up re-install, that this would be the way to go. The first effort resulted in exactly the same problem and was rectified by the second re-install. No idea why.

Having got through that (two days almost with the downloads etc) I then started putting my Community folder back together. My first ... you guessed it ... FBW320nx,  produced instant CTDs. Not hard to figure that out so I then deleted it and started with my other aircraft. Testing one at a time is very, very time consuming but it is a process that works.  After a further few days, I had all aircraft installed. I then proceeded to my sceneries in a similar fashion, followed by modded aircraft and utilities.

After weeding out a couple of modded aircraft, I found all very good and I was a happy vegemite again.

Then came the hotfix and back to my lock up problem so I had to uninstall and reinstall again due to the return of not being able to load the programme,  All good in the end though and today, I am flying again.

One small glitch though, that I have not seen mentioned anywhere at all.

After all this work, I did notice that the load times had extended somewhat. For a final (I thought) time I went into my Profile and Contents Manager and discovered again, that all my unwanted liveries, training programmes, bush trips etc were still there. I thought MS/Asobo were going to stop that...wrong again I guess. Being the proud possessor of a fine, but aged mental capacity, I thought that all these items listed as up to date could be well rid of and thus hasten my load-up times. So I ticked all of the ones I did not want (24GB) and hit delete. Well, I was a little surprised because it took 7 hours to delete that 24GB. BUT, I was a happy man again because of the anticipated new loading times. The next day, I clicked on my beloved MSFS icon and up it came .... with a mandatory update and you guessed it ... 24gb.  Two hours later (the time it took to download the mandatory update) I had all my deletions back in the Contents Manager.  They will probably stay there cluttering up my sim until MSFS can see their way clear to not reload them if deleted. I definitely suggest that NO-ONE follows this path of reckless stupidity LOL

So finally, it is all working again. I have noticed the color problem and most of the other things that people have complained about.  For the moment though, I see no need to add my problems to the world, as I really feel that enough has been said. Suffice to say that this has not really been one of MS/Asobos' finest updates or moments.

Onward and forward to the next hotfix and (my) anticipated uninstall/reinstall process.

Again Guys, this is not a complaint , I see what has gone before as a slight degradation, after a lot of time and work, of a much loved sim and I hope what I have gone through, may well help others.  Certainly, this was and is my intention.

Keep smiling,

Tony

I haven't experienced anything like the problems you have.  My install went smoothly, took about 2 hours more or less, and about the only CTDs I've experienced have been when I got a big too aggressive about putting stuff back in my Community folder.  As for the colors you mentioned, as a real world pilot, I think they actually make the world look more "real", because they look more like what I'm used to looking at through an actual aircraft window looking at the actual ground after hundreds of hours of flying.

Then again, when I hear people talking about all the problems they are experiencing I can't help but wonder if we're even running the same software, or if I have Microsoft Genies sneaking into my house at night and giving me secret stable builds.

However, none of the above is the point of my note.  The primary reason I am responding is to let you know that you need this.  When it comes to cleaning up for upgrades, insuring that you only have mods for the geography you are flying in loaded (though I'll concede I'm not as good at using that function as I should be), as well as organizing your addons in a safe place, it cannot be beat.  I remain surprised it's still freeware, it's that good.
