Folders in your Community folder?

Featured Replies

I have 14 folders now (15 GB total). But only 6 folders if I do not include the 5 for static aircraft and the 3 folders for AI ships.

Is there a recommended optimal limit to the number of folders in the community folder? Thank you.

Hardware: i7-8700k, GTX 1070-ti, 32GB ram, NVMe/SSD drives with lots of free space.
Software: latest Windows 10 Pro, P3Dv4.5+, FSX Steam, and lots of addons (100+ mostly Orbx stuff).

It's not so much the number of folders or their size that matters. It's the number of files contained in those folders that could be of concern. And really mostly of concern when loading the sim. The more files, the longer it takes (and it will vary from system to system).

Which is why the excellent Addons Linker program is highly recommended if you have a lot of addons. It allows you to activate only those addons that are applicable to the area you are planning to fly in. As well as allowing you to better organize your addons in a folder tree that makes sense to you.

For example, I currently have about 633 addons active, taking 95 gb of disk space, and containing about 100,000 files. At the moment, that takes about 3 minutes to load to the main menu, and another 4 minutes to load to the cockpit.

The optimal limit is what you are willing to accept with regards to load times. Which, again, will vary from system to system.

As Jim says, don't worry about the number or size of your add-ons, worry how many are active for the flight(s) you plan on taking during you session in the sim. I have 184GB in my Add-ons folder (which Addons Linker uses to load them into the sim), for a total of  over 251,000 files. Having them all active when loading the sim would waste a lot of time and resources, so using Addons Linker reduces that strain to a minimum.
