New TBM930 Drag Settings Appear to Have Gone Too Far

Featured Replies

I've been fairly pleased with the progress that MS/ASOBO has made in adjustments to the turboprops in general and to the performance of the TBM.  These changes, along with improvements from the tbm930 Improvement mod have brought this aircraft closer and closer to book.

One of the remaining issues was the gear/flaps creating too much drag, requiring torque settings quite a bit higher than normal on final with everything hanging.  Now it appears they went too far - even if I pull the throttle all the way to idle on final, the aircraft just won't slow down enough to make a normal touchdown.  Now, she floats for a while, even with the nose held at about 7 degrees.

She should sink at a power setting of 10% below 50 ft - if they can add back just a little more drag I think they'll have it?

I tested the default TBM yesterday and I thought it worked satisfactorily, except for the steering ability on the ground which was as lousy as it always has been.

Is the mod compatible with SU6?

Good point.  The mod's author has posted that it is completely SU6 compatible, but the adjustments ASOBO made to the flap and gear drag may now be correct for the default.  The mod does work fine in all aspects except for final when everything is hanging - I'll make my next TBM flight with the default aircraft and check that out.

As far as ground steering, I can easily apply the nose wheel castering angle correction from the mod to the default and steering won't be an issue.

Alright - just flew the default TBM and there is indeed improvement as far as power/drag on final after SU6.  It will take another couple of flights to see how close they are to book now, as I had gusting, quartering headwinds on final and had to carry more power to compensate.  After crossing the threshold hot she did slow down rapidly in the flare, so that's a lot better.

In which file can I find that setting?

In the flight_model.cfg file make the following change:

In the original file you'll see:
---------------------------------

max_castering_angle = 3.14159265358979 ; Defines the maximum angle a free castering wheel can take (in radians).
point.0 = 1, -7.5, 0, -4.14, 720, 0, 0.52, 15, 0.327, 1.5, 0.9, 13, 13, 0, 0, 0, 4

Change the 15 to 60 so it looks like the below:

max_castering_angle = 3.14159265358979 ; Defines the maximum angle a free castering wheel can take (in radians).
point.0 = 1, -7.5, 0, -4.14, 720, 0, 0.52, 60, 0.327, 1.5, 0.9, 13, 13, 0, 0, 0, 4

Personally, to reduce sensitivity a little, I use a setting of "50"
