runway view

Featured Replies

Is there any way for view from pilot seat to track down center line of runway?  My view from left seat is at an angle down runway.

Thanks

You can move the pilot eyepoint left and right - Ctrl + Shift + ENTER and Ctrl + Shift + BACKSPACE by default are mapped to this function.

By the way, the view is set up the way it is because in reality you'd be sitting on one side or other of the aircraft's centerline (unless you were in a fighter jet), and so the runway centerline would actually be off to your right or left to some extent, but that would vary with the distance of the point on the runway you were looking at: directly in front of you the centerline would seem to be off to the side, but the far end would appear to be in the middle of your view.

Because the view from the sim is projected onto a 2D plane for display on a 2D surface which is relatively near to your eyes, this means you will see the runway centerline as off to one side regardless of your distance from it, which is not how it is in the real world, where the light entering your eyes from outside is focussed to infinity, so the further away you are from an object you are approaching directly (ie the runway) the more it appears to be in the center of your vision. This is why the full Level D sims have collimated displays using mirrors which re-focus the light to infinity, so you see it with the correct perspective. Both pilots will see the runway directly in front of them at a sufficient distance from it. You can't do that on a home sim. Unless you're Wayne Ledzian or Gene Buckle, that is:

This was something that I had to adjust to in my recent full motion flightsim experience. Judging where the plane was relative to the runway centreline was a bit more difficult than seeing it on my PC monitor.
