February 21, 20224 yr G'day captains, I'm putting together an upgrade of sorts from the parts bin for MSFS. The current rig is very old and running P3D3.5 (i7-3770K, 1070, 24GB DDR3, SATA SSD) I have the following hardware to work with, just trying to find the optimal combination of hardware for FS because even with the sim being out for 2 years nobody has concluded if this sim is CPU or GPU bound, at least in the last half hour of research I've done. - Asus H270 Prime + i7-7700K + 32GB DDR4-2666 (8X4) - ASRock Z390 + i5-9400F + 32GB DDR4-3000 (16X2) - GTX1070 8GB (re-used, has a ghetto but extremely effective Noctua setup strapped to it) - GTX1070Ti 8GB (EVGA ACX FTX cooler) - Zotac GTX1060 6GB - T-Force 1TB NVMe SSD For a target of 25fps on a 32" 1440p display, what would be the most "balanced" setup? There's an optional budget (inclusive of selling the 1060 & 1070) to buy an RTX2070 or an i7-9900K, but not both. That's only if a stronger GPU or CPU is required to balance out the spec, respectively. All thoughts and suggestions welcome. Edited February 21, 20224 yr by nicky3762 Nicholas Schuester
February 21, 20224 yr This page, which was probably made before MSFS underwent massive CPU optimisation back at SU5, shows that the i7-7700K and 1070 Ti combo will pull at least 26.6 FPS at 1440p and Ultra settings, which meets your desired 25 FPS target. Prior to SU5, MSFS was mostly CPU bound at 1440p and 1080p, but now it is much better balanced between CPU and GPU. It's hard to say exactly, as it depends on what settings you use and where and what you fly, but the i7-7700K and 1070 Ti combo should be reasonably balanced in this regard. 9800X3D | 4090 | 64GB | 2+1TB NVME | 2TB SSD | 2TB HDD | 85/50/43” TVs | Quest 3 | DOF H3 Motion Rig | Buttkicker | T.16000M Flight Kit MSFS @ 4K Ultra DLSS Performance FG 80 FPS | VR VDXR Godlike 80Hz SSW | MSFS VR DLSS Quality, Ultra Preset - Windows 11 Acer Nitro 5 | i5-11400H | RTX 3060 6 GB | 32GB DDR4 | 15.6" FHD IPS 144Hz | 2 x 512 GB SSD | Windows 11
February 24, 20224 yr I'd definitely go with the 7700K and GTX 1070 Ti. If it's fairly cheap-ish Save up and get a RTX 3080 someday when the cards are more available. | My Liveries | FAA ZMP | PPL ASEL | | Windows 11 | MSI Z690 Tomahawk | 12700K 4.7GHz | MSI RTX 4080 | 64GB 6000 MHz DDR5 | 500GB Samsung 860 Evo SSD | 2x 2TB Samsung 970 Evo M.2 | EVGA 850W Gold | Corsair 5000X | HP G2 (VR) / LG 27" 1440p |
