May 20, 200719 yr Hello,After installing the FSX SP1 I'm just trying to compare different settings for the water effect options. Before the SP1 I've used the "High 1.x" option because I had a good performance with this setting. Now I've tried to use the "Mid 2.x" option, and now there comes the question:When I start from an airport which is situated directly at a sea or an ocean, or if I fly over an ocean, there is no difference of the framerate to be seen between the "High 1.x" and the "Mid 2.x" setting, but when I stand on a runway of an airport without water arround the area (e.g. KPHX, EGLL) then I have more frames with the "High 1.x" setting. Although there are no or not much water textures to render the frames are going down with the "Mid 2.x" setting. And over an ocean, where you can see much water, there is no difference to be seen between the "High 1.x" and the "Mid 2.x" setting.Has somebody an explanation for this observation? Thanks,PatricCore 2 Duo E63003GB RAMGeForce 8600GT 256MB
May 20, 200719 yr I don't know, but a lot of experts like Reggie Fields say that 2x low is the best option because it gives waves and more dimension and it's not *too* reflective that it seems unrealistic, and it also doesn't kill performance. I would never chose a 1x option because for me it looks like a solid blue line across the landscape.
May 20, 200719 yr The Mid 2.x setting reflects clouds as well as some elements of the landscape. It may be that when you're just flying over ocean, there's not much landscape (if any) to reflect, where as around airports with some water and lots of landscape, much of it has to be rendered an extra time for reflections. The Low 2.x setting is what works best for me. This only reflects the player aircraft, but still gives me the SM2.x animated waves and effects. A simple reflection map instead of the solid blue would have been apprecieted, but it's still much better than the hypnotizing cyclic effect of FS9. -
May 21, 200719 yr I had the same issue, so I kept it at 1x. I just d/l a water fix that reduces the texture size allowing me to go back to low 2x...The water is now perfect again. http://library.avsim.net/download.php?DLID=103348
May 21, 200719 yr Thanks for your answers. I like the reflections of the 2.x option too, however I don't need cloud reflections on the water, thats whyI think the "Low 2.x" setting is a good choice. Patric

The readme says: -------------------------------------------------InstallBACKUP the exisisting textures in the following locationOceanHeight20FieldLow_0.bmpand OceanHeightField.bmpe.gX:Program filesMicrosoft GamesMicrosoft Flight Simulator XTextureThen copy and overwrite the textures included.....All done...---------------------------------------------------------I've checked my Texture folder and instead of OceanHeight20FieldLow_0.bmp (that comes with the zip) I've found OceanHeight20FieldLow.bmp file. Is it SP1 thing? Should I remove the original OceanHeight20FieldLow.bmp file or just drop the one from the package side by side? Or rename the one in the package and drop it to replace the one in the Texture folder? :)Thanks.
May 21, 200719 yr Hmmmmm...now i'm not sure. I'm pretty sure I checked the original files with the new ones and the filenames were the same, so I just overwrote with the new ones. I will have to check my backup directory when I get home???
May 21, 200719 yr I believe the _0 in the end of the filename is a mistake. I simply renamed the two original files into .bmp.orig, unpacked the two third party BMPs and removed the _0 from the other. Seems to work just fine.
May 21, 200719 yr To get a big picture view of performance, I posted FPS for all the water effects settings here:http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho...ing_type=search
