FSX display problems on new laptop

Featured Replies

I'm having a problem with display of aircraft in FSX. I recently found it necessary to replace my old laptop, so I bought a Dell Inspiron 16 model 7610. In order to have aircraft display properly, I need to keep bouncing between Preview DirectX 10 on or off. Some airplanes display perfectly and others will show only a shadow on the ground or only some parts of the plane or the plane will show as completely white, devoid of any texture. Has anybody other than me had or is having this problem? DirectX should be backwards compatible. It's possible that I need to change the video card settings, but don't have any idea where to start. The specs of my system are:

Dell Inspiron 16 model 7610
Windows 11 Home 64-bit
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Laptop GPU
Display Mem= 6Mb
System Mem-32Mb
Version of DirectX is 12 Ultimate

I have considered switching to MSFS2020, but I like the variety of aircraft available in FSX, also, I have a sizeable investment in scenery and besides, the learning curve for MSFS is a bit steep for the 81 year old brain. I would appreciate any help or suggestions. Thanks

Welcome to the AVSIM forums! 😀  Can I assume you are using the disc version of FSX and Not FSX-Steam Edition?  If it is the disc version, is it with Acceleration?  Did you install SP1 and 2?

Just going to run a Chromebook and not upgrade to a Windows computer. Too many problems with the new Sims! 😱

You assume correct.  I am using the disc version of FSX, specifically, FSX Deluxe with Service pack 1 and 2 installed.

You're using DX9 models (all the ones developed for FS9 and earlier) while running FSX in DX10 mode. You have two options here:
1) Either go back to DX9 mode or,
2) Keep DX10 and purchase and install DX10 Scenery Fixer.

This utility is highly praised here, although I could never see an actual improvement when I used DX10. Maybe my settings were so conservative that I couldn't get any difference between DX9 and DX10.
