October 4, 20223 yr I've done some searching on this subject and it appears it can be done successfully in some instances. More curious why folks haven't done this and made it available on sites like these. I'm speaking of freeware versions with original author's permission of course Michael (Mitch)
October 4, 20223 yr " … in some instances" is the key phrase! FSX models can be and often are more complex than FS9 can handle (too much detail) so that aspect of scenery conversion can be a non-starter without a complete re-draw of the models in question. There are other aspects of FSX that FS9 can't emulate, so again, an extensive re-edit would be necessary. Any FSX scenery that can be easily converted to FS9 is likely to be relatively basic, else it started out as an FS9 scenery in the first place ;)
October 6, 20223 yr Hello Michael, well, the conversion itself is not a big deal. The main problem is the copyright issue. Even if you have the permission of the original designer to publish their work for another simulator, you have the problem, that the sceneries often are using the FSX libraries. Microsoft owns the copyright for them and without them most conversion sometimes look rather empty. If you own an unused FSX somewhere deep in your basement, I think, the situation is a bit different. Than you own the rights to convert and use the libraries for your own purpose on your own harddisk (please correct me, if I am wrong). The other problem is that only a few nice fellows answer when you ask for permission to convert their work... Dedl Edited October 6, 20223 yr by Dedl
October 6, 20223 yr Author Yes, I have a fully operational version of FSX on the same computer I use FS9 on. I have no concerns over the copyright issues as I have no intentions of selling it or bundling it as freeware. I only want to know how to convert it so I can simply use it on my own PC. There are many freeware FSX sceneries that I would like to convert for my own use. Nothing more. But I do not know the process, or the software tools I need to accomplish it.
October 7, 20223 yr Examples of which conversions have been achieved and which sceneries you are hoping to convert might be helpful. You'll probably have to re-generate the basic airfield layout using AFCAD2, SceneGenX, ADE or similar, then introduce the associated models one by one. If the models have been designed specifically for FSX you'll probably need to convert these individually using ModelConverterX or similar. Again, I emphasise, many models designed for FSX are simply too detailed to work in FS9 directly. Good luck :)
