November 6, 20223 yr Allegheny & Potomac Highlands Starting from Greenbrier Valley (KLWB) we make a quick detour to White Sulphur Springs (site of the Greenbrier Resort Hotel), then proceed to Ingalls (KHSP) and the Homestead Resort near Hot Springs. The route continues north to NRAO Green Bank, then crossing several ridges reaches the upper drainage of the Potomac River at waypoint EVERS. We follow the Strait Fork north to its junction with the North Fork South Branch of the Potomac River. The ridge to the left of the track is the Allegheny Front. We land at Grant County Airport near Petersburg West Virginia. Turning East Southeast we overfly multiple ridges and Lost River State Park before landing at Sky Bryce. The route turns Northeast with the Shenandoah Mountains on the left, and the Shenandoah valley and Massanutten mountain to our right. Two small grass strips and then we turn east to cross the Blue Ridge at Thoroughfare Gap just past Front Royal Virginia. We land at Upperville (2VG2) in the heart of Virginia horse country. Following the Blue Ridge to the north to Krens Farm (14VA) airstrip, then continuing past Charles Town with a landing at Needwood Farm (WV21) just above Harpers Ferry which is where the Shenendoah meets the Potomac and pushes through the Blue Ridge. The route north takes us past Sharpsburg (site of the Antietam Battlefield), Catoctin Mountain Park (site of Camp David – Presidential Retreat) and on to Gettysburg and our final destination. This puts in place the 100 meter radio dish and adds a few other details. Makes the visitor appreciate what is actually there. (And the political power of two WV senators.)
