approach basics

Recommended Posts

I haven't got into the ILS /Approach stuff yet but its time....basic questions... in order for the GS gauge to react to the localizer and the GS I have to have an approach selected and activated on the 530,yes?

I mean nothing happens unless they are on and Nav 1 has the ILS freq,?

Depend on what aircraft you got. While some advanced type can tune it automaticlly with FMS, many you'll need to tune on NAV1 manually.

If you are talking about just an ILS - it uses traditional radio navigation.  You don't need to activate anything on the GNS530 (except tune the frequency like you've already done).

And yes, NAV1 (The GNS530) should control your primary VOR1 or HSI instrument.

But important*** - make sure the word "VLOC" is shown on the bottom left of your GNS530.  This means VOR or LOCalizer (the traditional radio nav) is the navigation source.  If it's set to GPS, the source is the GPS (like if you wanted to fly an RNAV (GPS) approach.

Ideally you will fly down to the platform altitude on the chart (usually about 2500-3000 ft) and level off. Then intercept the localizer first. Then you should see the diamond on the PFD. It will move down the closer you get to the glideslope. Then it will engage seconds later.
