December 5, 20223 yr On 7th September 1953, Neville Duke took off from Tangmere to set up a new world air speed record of 727.63 mph along a course between Bognor and Littlehampton, off the South Coast of England. One month later, WB188 came to the end of its flying life and was transferred to RAF Halton as an instructional airframe. The Hawker Hunter is a transonic British jet-powered fighter aircraft that was developed by Hawker Aircraft for the Royal Air Force (RAF) during the late 1940s and early 1950s. It was designed to take advantage of the newly developed Rolls-Royce Avon turbojet engine and the swept wing. It was the first jet-powered aircraft produced by Hawker to be procured by the RAF. Later models of the Hunter went on to serve not only with the RAF, but with many other air forces worldwide. This aircraft WB188 is currently preserved at Tangmere Military Aircraft Museum.
