Crosswind takeoffs and landings

Featured Replies

Before I start, I first want to congratulate you guys at Flysimware for an absolutely amazing and beautiful plane, that was right up my alley, as I've been looking for a study level fast twin, which immediately takes default and Carenado planes off the list of targets when I came across the 414.  I am apparently a bit late to the party, but that's OK, as I did not have to count down the days to when it got released, and then deal with the first few days/weeks of bug fixes that inevitable arise when something goes out into the wild.

This is by no means a problem limited to your aircraft, but as a real-world pilot who can tell you from firsthand experience that taking off straight down the runway, even with a modest crosswind, is not nearly as difficult as MSFS makes it seem.  I've seen genuine professional airline pilots be all over the place left and right on takeoffs and landings with a whole host of aircraft, up through and including the PMDG 73s and the Fenix A320.

In searching for help, someone mentioned some variables that can be found and adjusted in the flight_model.cfg file regarding tire friction as well as ground and air crosswind effects that I wanted to try tweaking to see if I could get a straight takeoff with any sane level of a crosswind going, but when I went to look, those variables are not in that config file for your 414.

Is this something that is coming in a future release, or perhaps some other solution is in the works?

I am disabled, so 'get a set of rudder pedals' is not a viable solution for me, and besides, I've seen plenty of YT vids of people who have them and still have the same issues but let me stress again it's not unique to the 414, nor am I necessarily thinking about 414 related videos.

Thanks in advance,

Kev

This will be added in our next update. Just add this only. I found this also did not help in your situation as you said no rudder pedals. So there may be an issue with hardware settings or it's because rudder pedals are easier to hold a straight line as I have no issues. I find no issue keeping it straight at 26 knots crosswind and this is over the limit of 22 max wind allowed. I am only using 1/3 travel on the rudder to maintain straight. But I am sure these settings may help.

These settings also behave differently depending on the ground rudder assistance enabled. I would leave this off.

ground_crosswind_effect_max_speed = 80 // feet per second, default is 120
ground_crosswind_effect_zero_speed = 5 // feet per second, default is 10
ground_high_speed_steeringwheel_static_friction_scalar = 1
ground_high_speed_otherwheel_static_friction_scalar = 1

pitch_stability =0.125
roll_stability =0.125
yaw_stability =2.125 // updated

I suggest to not change any other settings and I will not go into the detail on why.

Well, no rudder pedals, but I do have a twist joystick which is a function I am quite familiar with, and can easily hold a straight line in zero to little crosswinds, it's just when those go up, the plane acts like it weighs about as much as a feather.  An exaggeration to be sure, but not too much of one.  Thanks for your help.
