Ladies and Gents, You have to try this flight plan and wpr

Recommended Posts

The Sim Soaring Club just concluded their weekly Saturday flight.    We flew over Norway,  departing at midnight.    The lighting,  scenery,  and terrain mesh were simply stunning.   A pure treat.    Beautiful lighting and reflections of the canopy.

Approx. 35 pilots attended today,  and it was cool seeing all the nav lights in the Norwegian moonlight.

They gave me permission to repost their flight plan and weather preset here.   The weather preset is particularly good,   nice ridge lift on the upwind side of ridges.    Fly it without a glider if you want,  but it's so fun with a glider.   Very challenging,   constant decision making.

Here is the .pln and wpr. hosted on my google drive,   https://drive.google.com/file/d/1XAqx8N_53OvX2bmOEVR9SMaFGBNzDhwu/view?usp=sharing

SSC's .pln's contain tasking data such as min/max waypoint radius, or altitude.   For example,  this task had a start line with a 3000ft altitude cap,  and a 2500m max radius.

The tasks are created with B21 Task Planner,  https://xp-soaring.github.io/tasks/b21_task_planner/index.html

The default nav system in the AS33ME can load B21's task data.     The LXN nav mod for the DG808s,  Discus 2c,   and DG1000e can also load that tasking data.

https://flightsim.to/file/15090/as-33-me   (tasking system built in,  no nav mod needed)

https://msfs.touching.cloud/mods/ms-dg-808s/   -  https://flightsim.to/file/41698/dg808s-lxn-nav-replacement    (needs the nav mod)

https://flightsim.to/file/41623/discus-2c-lxn-nav-replacement

SSC has been able to create some great weather presets since the last sim update.    Gliding is beginning to be very nice.

Forgot to mention,  that I prefer the DG808s.    It's just so fun to fly with it's 3 notches of negative flaps,   zero flaps,  and 3 notches of positive flaps (one pos position is landing).   It also has speed brakes.   Very fun to manage energy in it.

@Waldo Pepper Looks like you have everything covered from A to Z. I really must try gliding in the sim. Was only a flight or two away from soloing in RL at SOSA Welcome To SOSA Gliding Club before an engine up front took priority! Remember the epic quietness!

@Waldo Pepper,

thanks for sharing the remarkable experience and your task!

Norway is, for sure, one of the best places in Europe to soar and MFS with it's unique scenery surely makes the virtual soaring almost like being there!

Then there's that DG808s ( from SSG  I guess, with the turbine 🙂 ) by Touching Cloud, and you mentioned a very important feature that is after all possible to model a bit better in MFS than in other simulators excluding the best of all for soaring - Condor - and is the use of negative flap settings for better high speed / higher wing loading performance.

You just caused my Internet Provider a new headache 🙂 and awakened the installer side of the Moon 🤣

Speed to fly Cheat Sheet,

Quote

What Speed do you fly to get the maximum distance over the ground in still air?   (DG-808)

BEST GLIDE -   110 kph (60 KNOTS)

In a headwind?

BEST GLIDE PLUS 1/2 the Wind Speed

In a tailwind?

MIN SINK    -  90 kph  (49 KNOTS)

In lift?

MIN SINK CORRECTED FOR ANGLE OF BANK

In Sink?

MacCREADY setting

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

**BEST GLIDE   =  DG-Flugzeugbau quotes the best glide angle at 110 kph (60 kts) as over 50:1.

**MIN SINK    =   The best climb rate is achieved at 90 kph (49 kts).
